Isabella returned to school, her thoughts racing. What had she been thinking, ditching class to support her jerk of a boyfriend?
“Isa!” Brett hurried over, worry etched on his face. “Where have you been? You missed the test!” His voice was filled with concern.
“Oh,” Isabella muttered, sniffing as she looked away. That’s when Brett noticed the faint bruise on her arm.
“What happened to you, Isabella?” he asked, his concern growing deeper.
“It’s nothing,” Isabella shook her head.
“Did Ace do this?” Brett asked, anger rising in his voice.
“It wasn’t Ace,” she quickly defended.
“Then what did Elijah do?” Brett pressed, his jaw clenched.
“Brett, I’m fine. I promise,” Isabella interrupted, trying to brush it off.
“You know you can talk to me, Isabella. We’re friends,” Brett reminded her, his voice softening.
“I’m fine,” Isabella sighed, clearly exhausted.
“You can’t be fine with bruises and tears. If I were with you, I swear I wouldn’t let anyone hurt you or make you cry,” Brett said, his voice filled with emotion, causing Isabella to look at him, stunned.
“If being with him makes you cry, then you should leave that douchebag,” he added bitterly.
“What are you trying to say, Brett?” Isabella blinked in confusion.
“I’m saying that I like you. I know I might be crossing a line, but I think I’m falling for you. Don’t ask me how—it just happened,” Brett confessed, his voice tinged with uncertainty. When Isabella didn’t respond, he sighed heavily.
“I shouldn’t have said that. I know this isn’t what you needed to hear—”
He was cut off when Isabella suddenly stepped forward and pressed her lips against his. She didn’t know why she did it; all she knew was that it felt like she’d been waiting forever to hear him say those words.
“Wow, wow, you couldn’t even wait until we broke up?” Ace’s voice sliced through the moment. He stood behind them, out of breath, looking like he had run all the way to school.
Isabella pulled away from Brett, her heart pounding. She glanced between Ace and Brett, a wave of guilt washing over her. What was she thinking?
“I should have known,” Ace muttered, shaking his head as he began to walk away.
Isabella ran after him. “I’m sorry, Ace! I don’t know why I kissed him!” she shouted, desperation in her voice.
“Really? You didn’t know why you kissed Elijah too?” Ace smirked coldly, glancing back at her.
“I didn’t kiss Elijah!” Isabella protested, frustrated.
“How am I supposed to believe that?” Ace asked, his eyes flashing with anger and hurt.
“I love you, Ace,” Isabella cried, her voice trembling.
“Do you love Brett too?” Ace shot back, his tone laced with bitterness.
“Stop!” Isabella covered her face with her hands, overwhelmed.
Ace chuckled darkly. “I suspected it from the start, but I chose to ignore it because you were the first girl who ever made my heart skip a beat. I just didn’t expect it to hurt this much.” A single tear slipped down his cheek, but he quickly wiped it away.
“Ace,” Isabella whispered, her heart breaking.
“You’re such a sad, pitiful girl, Isabella. And I pity your mental state once you figure out the truth behind all of this,” Ace said before walking away, leaving her standing in the aftermath of his words.
Isabella squeezed her eyes shut, sinking to the floor as tears began to flow freely. How had everything spiraled so out of control? She had once been the queen of Briarwood, and now she found herself trapped between three different guys, unsure of who she even was anymore.
“Poor Isabella,” Valeria’s voice cut through her misery, dripping with mockery. She stood nearby, arms crossed under her chest, leaning against a locker. “This is only the beginning of your mental breakdown.”
