I will forever commend my mom wherever I will be for never neglecting the law of this verse while raising me up as a child.
But is sad I never heed to all her training, advice and good upbringing.
I remember vividly when I was graduating from the nursery class to the primary classes. Mom had sat me down to advise and warn me against some dirty lifestyle I should be mindful of.
“Don’t steal anybody’s belongings, don’t lie or lay false accusations against anyone and don’t disrespect your seniors and teachers. Choose your friends wisely. Don’t rush to make friends with anyone but carefully study them on how they behave and talk to people.
Friends influence friends. If you mingle with thieves, you will definitely start stealing, if you mingle with liars and kids who disrespects their elders, you will copy their lifestyle and then you will become a thorn on everybody’s flesh including me your mom.
If you must succeed in your academic field and graduate to become an accountant like you desire , you must build yourself up positively and surround yourself with people who will help bring out the best in you. Focus on your studies and always don’t forget to pray like I’ve thought you…”
I was just seven yrs old then but I sticked to this words until I graduated into secondary school.
I made a group of friends who were always the talk of every student in the school .
They were very popular in the school but not for being intelligent but for their atrocious acts.
My main motive of joining them was to be among the most talked student in the school.
But I wanted it in a better way other than theirs and I thought that students would talk about me as the better and intelligent one amongst them. But it was the opposite, just like my Mom said, if you move with a criminal, no matter how good you’re, you will be defined as a criminal.
But I didn’t care. Our friendship grew intimate until we graduated from junior secondary school into the senior classes.
We were six in numbers and the eldest was Daniel but we usually called him Da n.
Dan was a good inventor of evil. Back then in junior classes, Dan would always come up with one idea of evil or crime they would embark on after school.
I had carefully pulled myself out whenever they were on their mission of evil and Dan wouldn’t say anything or Force it on me.
I thought it was a sign of respect but Dan was carefully waiting for me to come of age. He was nineteen years old but in the same class with me. He’s said to have repeated JSS3 four times.
I was fifteen years old then in SSS1 when Dan introduced me to my destiny killer.
After school that beautiful day, Dan invited us (His friends) to his house for his birthday celebration. I had turned down his invitation at first but he promised to take me home before my parents return from work.
I agreed and followed him home after school that day.
When we arrived his home, his parents were out and he told us they won’t be returning home until night.
I was expecting Dan to present us the cake or drink he bought for the birthday celebration but Dan brought out a packet of cigarettes .
He gave others one each and they collected it laughing and praising him. He put his in between his lips and stretched out a stick of cigarettes for me.
“I don’t smoke.” I told him bluntly.
They all laughed at me.
“You’re here to celebrate my birthday with me, and this is my cake to us. Besides, it rained today and you’re cold. You need this to help yourself.” Dan said as he puffed the smoke of his cigarette into the air.
I tried to resist but Dan succeeded in having me smoke with them.
And that was how I joined the gang of smokers and gradually became weak in studies. My scores began to reduce from 100% to 40%. Mom was surprised and sad. Every morning she would place her hand on my head to pray for me to come up again but I know I was long lost.
I and my friends would secretly sneak out of the school every morning to the uncompleted building at the back of the school to smoke and drink. It was fun to me and I thought I was enjoying myself.
All my friends then had a girlfriend and I felt inferior for not having one. Dan promised to bring a girl for me but I told him not to worry I was going to make that choice myself.
The enjoyment and fun continued until I graduated from secondary School at seventeen.
Dan and the rest of the boys couldn’t make it into the University with me, so when I got admission a year later into the University, I decided to live good and focus on my studies but I later met another group of bad boys who were even deadlier than Dan’s gang.
They introduced me to different kinds of things to smoke and hard drugs to drink.
Three years in the University, I got a girlfriend. I wanted to explore another line of fun which my friends were into but my girlfriend has this godly and high moral standard that didn’t give me room to what I wanted from her.
The lifestyle my mom and dad wanted me to live, she has it all. The more I tried to make this dirty move towards her, the more I failed. I got fed up and called off the relationship. I even warned her not to even come close to me ever again.
But few days after the break up, she showed up in my apartment and met me and my friends smoking.
“Emmanuel!!!” She called out in shock.
Before I could get up and walk to the door, she was gone.
The next day, my mom gave me a call asking me to come home after lecture. I did but I wasn’t expecting what I received.
Immediately I walked into the living room, my dad welcomed me with a slap and then showed me a picture of me and my friends smoking in his phone.
“For how long have you been doing this Emmanuel,?” My mother was in tears staring at me. I couldn’t speak, fear and regret took hold of me.
“I’ve been wasting my money training a tout!?” He yelled at me.
The rest of the day went down with me regretting taking that step my mother solemnly warned me against.
My parents were disappointed and even my little sister refused coming close to me.
I went back to school with the thought of turning a new leaf, thought of being a better son, the thought of living the godly life mother instored in me, but it was late.
A month later, I was coming out of my class room after lecture when
I slipped and fell.
I woke up the next day in the hospital bed and the first person I set my eyes on was my mother. She was in tears.
“Emma why? Emma where did I go wrong in bringing you up? Why did you decide to break me like this?” She wept.
My smoking and intake of harmful drugs has completely damaged my heart and my kidneys were not spared….
The doctor said 72hrs is all I have to live and breath from this moment.
I’m just here on the bed, pained and full of regrets, waiting for Mr death… Mother and Dad gave me the best training a child needs but I did not adhere to it..
