“Fernando?” Lucia called out, looking surprised at the man seated with her parents.
“Peanuts,” Fernando smirked, causing her to glare at him.
“You two already know each other? That’s wonderful!” Mrs. Landon smiled. “Why don’t you sit down so we can discuss everything?”
“No!” Lucia shook her head.
“No?” Mr. Landon gave her a disappointed look.
“I’m not marrying Fernando or anyone else!” she declared firmly. George, though trying to seem disinterested, couldn’t help but glance at her, surprised to hear about the marriage.
“Why not? You’re not getting any younger, sweetheart,” Mrs. Landon gave her a sympathetic look.
“I know, Mom, which is why I brought him here.” She grabbed George’s arm and pulled him forward. “Mom, Dad, Fernando—this is my boyfriend, George Williams. I didn’t tell you earlier because I didn’t want you to judge me. I know you always wanted me to marry someone wealthy, but George makes me happy,” Lucia explained, while George looked at her, confused.
“Interesting,” Fernando muttered, sipping his cocktail through a straw.
“You’re being ridiculous,” Mr. Landon frowned.
“I’m serious, Dad. George, say something to my father,” Lucia prompted, nudging George.
George cleared his throat awkwardly. “Mr. Landon, I love your daughter very much. I hope you’ll consider giving us a chance,” he muttered, while Lucia smiled discreetly.
Mrs. Landon glanced at her husband in frustration while he rubbed his temples, shaking his head, uncertain about what to do.
Fernando stood up, walking towards Lucia, but George stepped in front of her, seeing how tense she was becoming.
“I don’t care about whatever relationship you two have,” Fernando said coolly, ignoring George. “I’ve already sent enough money for the engagement ring. I’ll pick you up for lunch tomorrow, and that’s when I’ll propose.” Without waiting for a response, he walked away.
“George, wait for me in the car. I’ll be right there,” Lucia whispered. George nodded and left.
“What do you think you’re doing, Lucia? We know that’s a random guy you hired to play along,” Mrs. Landon accused.
“But he’s not, Mom!” Lucia sighed in frustration.
“Lucia, you need to marry him. It’s business, and you know it. You’ve been engaged to him since childhood, and the agreement was to marry when you turned 24. Fernando won’t tolerate us going back on our word,” Mr. Landon said gently.
“I get it, Dad. You both sold me off for business because I’m a woman, and in your eyes, I don’t matter. Fernando has tormented me since we were young. I hate him,” Lucia crossed her arms angrily.
“You’re adults now. You’ll get along just fine. But stop calling him ‘Geography’,” Mr. Landon said.
“It’s George!” she snapped. “And I’m tired of you two making decisions for me. Good night!” She turned and stormed out, ignoring her parents’ calls for her to come back.

Lucia got back to the car where George was sitting silently. She slipped into the seat next to him, and the drive started. The silence between them felt heavy. After a few moments, Lucia felt the need to explain herself.
“I know this is all surprising, but tomorrow, we’re having lunch together. I’ll buy a ring, and you’ll propose to me,” she mumbled. George clenched his jaw.
“Is that why you asked me to come with you to New York? To use me?” he asked, barely containing his anger.
“Why do you think I’ve been paying you all this money? Last I checked, it was you who owed me. You’re supposed to do me favors,” Lucia scoffed.
George stared at her, incredulous. “I was minding my own business, but you dragged me into this. I don’t like being helped by people who turn around and blackmail me. I was doing fine on my own until you came along and ruined my life!” he snapped harshly.
Lucia chuckled bitterly, then turned to the driver. “Stop the car,” she ordered. The driver complied immediately.
“You’re such a bastard, George!” she yelled before stepping out of the car.
“Where are you going? You don’t know your way around New York!” George called after her, but she ignored him.

Lucia walked alone through the dark alley, scoffing at her own situation. She paused when a rat scurried out from a trash can. Suddenly, she felt like someone was following her. Tightening her grip on her bag, she quickened her pace. The footsteps behind her got closer. She turned to see two men approaching.
“We won’t hurt you. Just drop your bag and phone,” one of the men said, pulling out a knife.
Lucia screamed and ran. The men chased after her, gaining speed. She tried to run faster, but her heels made it difficult. They were closing in when she collided with someone.
It was George.
He glanced at her briefly before turning to face the men. “Leave, now,” he warned.
“Or what?” the man with the knife sneered.
“Or this,” George said, landing a swift kick to the man’s face. The second man tried attacking him from behind, but George caught his hand, twisting it until the knife fell to the ground.
The first man stood up, trying to punch George, but George dodged his attacks, delivering several punches in return. The second man, now recovered, lunged at George, but George easily evaded him, throwing him into his friend.
Realizing they were outmatched, the men retreated. George brushed himself off and walked back to Lucia.
“What were you thinking, coming here alone?” he shook his head, frustrated.
Lucia, pushing some stray hair back from her face, looked down. “I’m still your boss. Just because you saved me doesn’t mean you can call me a fool,” she muttered.
George stepped closer, gently lifting her chin so she could look him in the eyes. His thumb wiped away a tear she hadn’t realized was falling.
“Let’s go,” he said softly. Lucia nodded, and he took her hand, leading her back to the car.
