“Oh, please!” I sneered.
“Come forward and pick from the pot; your fate is now in your hands.” She said this, and two large Calabashes appeared right in front of us.
I hesitate for a while.
“Do not waste the god’s time, otherwise you will be struck with leprosy.” Two ladies dressed in red and white appeared in the room, their faces painted with white chalk paint and their heads adorned with cowrie beads.
“Pick Patricia, so we can get out of here,” Victoria said.
“I will not pick.” I said adamantly.
“Then be ready to sacrifice to the gods of Makaka.” The two ladies spoke simultaneously.
I took a step forward. I stared at the Calabash, deciding which one to choose.
The calabash was the same size and shape. But the difference is that one appears old and weak, whereas the other appears new and somewhat strong.
I pointed to the new one.
“I chose this,” I stuttered.
“Are you certain?” The ladies repeated their question in unison.
“Yes, I am sure,” I responded. I am silently praying for a positive outcome.
One of the girls approached the one I had chosen, opened it, and handed it to me to see what was inside.
It contains crystal clear water.
“What do you see,” she inquired.
“I see water,” I responded.
“Look deeper.” She instructed, and my lovely Jewel appeared beneath the water.
I was stunned and taken aback.
“Please, not my child. “She is all I have.” I started crying.
“She will be sacrificed to Makaka in order for you to become wealthy,” she stated.
“Never,” I exclaimed, smashing the Calabash on the floor.
