The man still continued shaking his head in denial.
“Your name is Jamal Bryant, forty years old, married to Mariah Coleman and have three kids together” he paused and raised an eyebrow at the man. “Should I continue?”
Jamal stared at Mr Baldwin for a while, then gulped and shook his head.
“Let me go, ok? Just let me go, I don’t wanna get involved with them” he said.
“Them? Does that mean you are admitting you know him?” Mr Baldwin gestured towards the photo in Lucas’s hand.
Jamal nodded.
“Yes, I know him, but I can’t say anything or my family will pay” he said.
Mr Baldwin looked at Jamal in the eyes, all he could see was fear, he reached for his shoulder, and tapped it reassuringly.
“Don’t worry about whoever they are, just tell me everything you know and I promise I’ll protect your family, and keep them safe” he told Jamal honestly.
Jamal stared back at him for a moment, his eyes searched Mr Baldwin’s and although he saw sincerity, he still wasn’t assured.
“Who are you? And why should I believe you?”
“I’m Duncan Baldwin, have you heard of me before?”
Jamal frowned slightly.
“Duncan Baldwin.. the king of pop?”
“Yes, and this accident costed me someone very important” he sighed. “Even if you don’t say anything, are you sure they won’t come after your family? Can you be so sure that your family’s safe by keeping quiet?”
Jamal thought about it for a moment, he inhaled deeply and exhaled roughly.
“Fine, I feel like I can trust you, because you don’t seem like a bad person but…” his expression changed, he became serious. “.. you must honor your word and make sure my family’s safe, I don’t think I’ll live long after spilling everything I know” he said.
“Don’t worry about that, Jamal, Mr Baldwin is a man of his word” Lucas said.
“I want him to promise me” Jamal’s eyes didn’t leave Mr Baldwin while saying this.
Mr Baldwin nodded affirmatively.
“I will keep your family very safe” he promised.
Jamal nodded and puffed out some air, before he began.
“I knew Marco since I was a ten years old boy, I have being his errand boy for long, and we have been supplying planks together, although we don’t take large orders”
He paused, but Mr Baldwin gestured him to continue.
“But two days before the accident, Marco received a strange call, I don’t know who he was talking to or what they talked about…but he came to me and told me we’ve received a very large order, and we’re gonna be rich… ”
A low growl emitted from Mr Baldwin’s throat which interrupted Jamal, but Lucas signaled him to ignore Mr Baldwin and continue.
“.. so, we went to our site that evening and started working, we finished working, and loading our truck before dawn, but Marco didn’t agree to my suggestion of delivering the planks that day, he insisted we waited until the next day -which was the day of the accident”
Jamal did a sharp intake of breath as he shut his eyes, with a pained expression, as though he just recalled something unpleasant.
“Marco received another call from that strange number before the accident, he had a little argument with the caller and he was complaining about increasing his payment because the job involves lives. I don’t know if the caller agreed but he ended the call and started driving, I asked him what’s going on but he didn’t reply me and continued driving until a small car appeared a few meters ahead of us…the distance between us was enough for Marco to avoid the car, but he purposely drove towards the car on highspeed, and in an attempt to dodge our truck whoever was driving the car lost control, and the car fell off a cliff… ”
Mr Baldwin turned towards one of his men standing behind him, he landed an angry punch on his face and kicked him hard on his stomach, sending him across the cell. He turned back to Jamal and narrowed his eyes, but Jamal didn’t stop talking.
“… he jumped off the truck, I thought he was going to rescue the people inside the small car, but he ran into the woods and that’s the last I saw of him till this day” he concluded.
“You don’t know, or have any clue where Marco is right now?” Lucas asked.
Jamal shook his head.
“No, but I received a threatening text from a strange number that day, they said I should keep my mouth shut or I’ll be sorry.. I’ve been receiving texts like that for years now, even before and after I got married”
“Those b@stards!” Mr Baldwin growled.
“Right, Marco forgot his phone that day in the truck, I took it and I’ve been keeping it in my house as a souvenir, maybe you might get a clue from it”
“Tell us where you kept it” Lucas said.
“It’s in my…. ”
Jamal suddenly tensed, his eyes widened and his mouth open but he stopped talking, then blood started gushing out from the center his forehead.
“Bloody, hell! He’s been shot, there’s a fuçking sniper!” Mr Baldwin yelled angrily.
Lucas quickly jumped in front of Mr Baldwin protectively, as he pointed his gun towards the direction the bullet came from. Even the other men pointed their guns alertly towards the door and window.
“How did a sniper fuçking manage to sneak into our base, and shoot someone?!” he asked no one in particular, yet expected everyone to answer.
Everyone stayed silent as they’re all scared of what he’d do to them, or maybe they really didn’t. He growled lowly, and gritted his teeth in anger when none of them were saying nothing.
“Find that unfortunate sniper, I want him dead or alive!” he roared.
His men obeyed his command and rushed out in search of the sniper. Mr Baldwin faced Lucas.
“Take some men to his house, search for the phone and bring his wife and kids to the safehouse!” he commanded. “Make sure you get there before the enemies, or you’ll be sorry!” he bellowed further.
“Yes, sir” Lucas answered, he threw some keys to Mr Baldwin and rushed out with some men.
“Shît!” Mr Baldwin exclaimed as he recalled something.
He reached for his phone and hurriedly typed a number, he impatiently waited for whoever he was calling to pick up.
“Yes, Mr Baldwin” a familiar female voice sounded from the other side.
“Fatima” he called. “Are you with my wife? Have you both left the hospital already?”
“Yes, sir, we just got home and Mrs Baldwin is taking a bath” she reported.
“Good. Be very vigilant and double the guards at home until I arrive”
“Yes, sir” then Mr Baldwin ended the call, he shoved his phone in his pocket and rushed out.
