“Me?” She asked starring at Caleb.

“Please! You know that if I have to take this invoice to the top floor, I will have to see Susan and you know that she’s a girl I once dated. I will end up dead once I get there” Caleb implored.

Please Marie, it’s the invoice for our purchases of last month just take it there and leave. Am counting on you ” Caleb said as he hand the invoice to her before walking off.

Marie sighed as she stared at the invoice in her hand. She also didn’t want to go, she knew Romeo wasn’t back from his trip though a week and half have gone by but she still didn’t want to be in his office or get the chance of running into him when he arrives.

But the invoice, she thought as she made her way to the elevator. She will just have to take a chance.

She got to Romeo floor only to find his secretary absent, she decided to put the invoice on her desk and leave but thought other wise.

It might not be safe to keep something delicate there and so instead she went into Romeo office and put the invoice on his table luckily for her there was no one around and quickly she tried to make her exit only for Romeo to walk in.

Her reaction on seeing him was one of shock but his was one of joy.

“Miss me that much that you had to come to my office?” He asked as he walked in closing the door.

“It’s not that…..I just came to drop in the kitchen invoice and……” Marie stopped when she was suddenly pulled into a hug.

“I missed you so much, it’s good to be back home” he muttered as he breathe in her scent.

Marie felt her heart racing, this only happens whenever Romeo is around her or close to her.

“How have you been doing?” He asked as he stared down at her

“Fine” she replied not daring to look him in the eye.

“And so? Have you been thinking about it?” He asked wrapping his arms around her.

She pulled out of his arms and braced herself to give

“Even if you give me a year to think about it my answer will still be the same” she said this not looking at him.

She didn’t know why but she couldn’t look him straight in the eye and reject him. She doing this hurt a lot, it hurts more than when she found out about her condition.

“Can’t you think about it again, am willing to wait Marie” he said softly and this time she forced herself to look at him.

“I don’t feel the same way Romeo. I don’t love you and I can’t be with a man I don’t love, so I beg of you to stop this and leave me alone” she said as she turned to leave only for him to pull her back.

In his arms Marie watched how his mouth descend on hers and for a while she tried to resist but Romeo lips on hers was driving her crazy.

Instead of pushing him away like she did before, she wrapped her arms around him while he pulled her closer plunging into the sweetness of her mouth.

They kept kssing for a while that Marie never wanted it to end but it did end and it was Romeo who ended it.

“You say you don’t love me but your ksses says other wise. You want me as much as I want you and I can also tell that you love me too” he said.

Marie have been trying to deny it for a while but hearing it from Romeo lips made her admit to herself that she’s really in love with Romeo.

The thought filled her with joy and at the same time she remembered what those girls in the rest room said and that shattered the joy in her.

“I need to get back to work” she said quickly as she turned to leave.

“Running away won’t solve a thing Marie and it won’t make me give up” he spoke behind her which made her stop.

“You leave me no choice, you will have to cope with having my attention cause I will start meddling in your life.

You won’t be able to get rid of me or the feelings you have cause I won’t let you achieve that” he added and when he said no more, she pulled the door open and quickly left the room without giving a reply.

Marie got back to the cafeteria only to see the guys together, they were starring at Charles phone.

“Charles here needs to attend a cooking competition. You see this competition can help boost Charles career as a chef but there is a problem” Caleb said as they all stared at her.

“The theme for the competition is cooking for your lover and so Charles have to cook with his lover which brings us to you” Caleb replied again.

“So you want me to go with Charles?” Marie asked.

“Bingo! But not as a fellow chef but as his lover. It’s a once in a lifetime competition and Charles have always applied for it, he won it this year but he doesn’t have a girlfriend” Jacob replied.

“You don’t have to do it if you don’t want to” Charles spoke up starring at her.

“What do you mean? This is important to you and you should be asking for her help not discouraging it” James said.

“So what do you say Marie? Will you help a colleague who is in dire need of your help?” Caleb asked her.

“I will. Since it’s something that will be profitable to Charles” Marie replied and they all cheered at her.

Marie was busy laughing at some weird things Caleb and the other guys were telling her that she didn’t notice Charles starring at her.

“If it’s a yes then I will make you the most happiest woman on earth but if it’s a no then I won’t give up. I will meddle in your affairs, be your shadow and drive you crazy with attention until you say yes to me” He added and this brought Marie starring at him again.

“I love you Marie and I won’t give up on you” He vowed as she kept starring at him.

The ringing of the phone broke further conversation and Immediately Marie went into the confine of her room.

Still dazed by Romeo’s confession, she sat on the bed.

Romeo loves her, she just can’t believe that a man like him would be interested in her.

Marie sighed out on reading the letter, she won’t have to see him for a week which was something good.

She kept feeling good as Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday went by but on Thursday she began to feel lonely, she didn’t know why but the thought of going back to Romeo’s empty pent house made her feel more lonely than ever.

She tried not to think about Romeo but that wasn’t possible since he is the owner of Brooks international.

Every of the employees in the company talked about him which made it hard for her to keep him out of her mind.

His apartment is the only place she doesn’t get to think of him, she thought as she sat on the sofa to turn on the TV while she munch on a snacks.

As soon as the TV was on she was surprised to see that it was a talk show, a talk show which had Romeo in it.

She sat listening to him answering every questions the host was asking him and for a while she was transfixed starring at his face, he must have done the talk show during his trip cause the hair style he had on was different.

“So Mr Brooks, tell us more about your love life. Are you still a playboy roving around ?” The host asked.

“My playboy days are over” he replied.

“Why? Have someone managed to capture your heart?” The Host asked again and this time Romeo stared intently at the camera before answering.

“Yes. Someone have stolen my heart and I hope that she will give me a chance to show her how much I love her”

Marie knew he was talking about her, she felt her heart constricting not because of pain but of something else.

Her heart kept pounding real hard that she had to put her hand on her chest wanting it to stop.

Turning off the TV did help the furious pounding of her heart but it didn’t stop her from thinking about Romeo.

It was lunch break and Marie was heading back to the kitchen when she was informed by the receptionist that Blake would like to see her.

She knocked and when she heard Blake voice telling her to come in, she walked in expecting to see Romeo but it was only Blake she saw there.

“A gift for my friend wife” he said as he gave her the bouquet of flowers.

“You didn’t have to” she said but her reaction showed that she liked the gesture.

“You deserve it says Romeo” Blake said and she looked up at him in confusion.

“Now tell me what’s going on with you?” Romeo asked the minute they were in.

“What do I have to tell you? You heard everything from Charles ” she replied as she turned to leave but he pulled her back.

“Isn’t there a solution to it? You can’t live like this for the rest of your life just a moment ago you were eating spoilt fries” Romeo said.

“I did eat it but that doesn’t mean that something bad will happen to me. So stop making a fuss and besides there’s no solution to it” she said.

“Let it drop Romeo! Have come to terms with my being this way and it has nothing to do with you. So leave me alone!” She said as she quickly went to her room, slamming the door right on his face.

A while later Romeo sat in his room as he went through the number of doctors he had.

Not that he had a lot of doctors at his bidding but the doctor he kept calling referred him to someone who knew more about Marie condition.

The last call he made turned out to be fruitless as the doctor also told him the same thing which is that Marie’s condition is a permanent thing and instead of looking for a cure he should try to help her come to terms with it.

Romeo sighed as he took his laptop trying to search for something about it online when he heard a loud thump from the other room.

He got up and quickly went to Marie’s room only to find her on the floor clutching her stomach tightly.

“What’s wrong?” Romeo asked as he quickly went to her and held her in his arms.

She opened her eyes and stared up at him while wincing at which ever pain was bothering her.

“My….my stomach….it hurts” she replied clutching it tightly.

“I will get a doctor……” He said but she shook her head.

“You shouldn’t. It’s not that much of a big deal” she told him.

“What do you mean by its not much of a big deal? You are in pain for crying out loud” he said.

“I….I will be fine…..this things happen Romeo”She muttered.

“I am still calling the doctor” he said lifting her into his arms and carrying her to his room.

“But I will be fine in my room” she said softly but he wasn’t listening to her.

He layed her on the bed and was about to call the doctor when his phone began to ring.

“Am in the middle of something, I will call you later” he said hanging up the call.

He dialled for his personal doctor and when he confirmed that the doctor was coming, he hanged up the call and went to seat on the bed starring at Marie who was still in pain.

“Does it hurts that much?” He asked and she nodded.

“But I will be fine. You don’t have to worry about me and…..”

“I have to. You are my wife and it’s only right that I take care of you” he told her as his phone began to ring again.

“The document. Have forgotten about it but I will fax it to you tomorrow, I can’t do it tonight, something urgent came up” he said into the receiver as he stared at Marie again.

When he ended the call she watched him dial someone number again.

“Cancel all my appointment for tomorrow and also help me prepare that document. I was meant to do it but something came up and have been busy since then.

Let the document be ready tomorrow cause am taking it with me during the business trip” he said and after listening for a while, he ended the call.

“All appointment cancelled. Am all free ” he said wanting to add the ‘for you’ part to it but managed to stop himself.

The door bell rang and a while later the doctor finished his examination and Marie was asleep when the doctor left.

Turns out it was just menstrual cramp and due to the spoilt fries she had eaten earlier it had caused her stomach hurting much more.

He sat beside her on the bed and took hold of her hand. Her brows was furrowed and she kept muttering something like she was having a bad dream.

He took hold of her hand and gently tried to soothe her but it didn’t work. She kept on muttering things to herself and without thinking, he pulled the sheets over and slept beside her on the bed.

Pulling her to himself, she snuggled close and a while later they were both sound asleep.

They found a table and the five of them sat there. Soon Caleb, Jacob and James where taken to the floor to dance and party but she sat talking to Charles.

She was laughing at the broken song Caleb was singing with the use of the karaoke when everyone went silent.

She was still wondering what caught their attention when she saw Romeo and Blake walk into the room.

? “It’s the boss ”

? “What’s he doing here?”

? “He’s never been to any of our party before”

Romeo heard them say and it knew they might feel uncomfortable while having him there but Blake took charge.

“You all shouldnt mind our presence like everyone else we came to relax after working hard” Blake said but their answers was dull and by the look in their eyes Romeo could see that they were still uncomfortable by his presence.

He took off his coat and loosened his tie before smiling at everyone of them.

“I might be your boss but that’s when we are in the company but out of it, I want you all to treat me like a fellow colleague and if that’s still hard, I want you to treat me like a friend cause all of are equal and do therefore the drinks and every food tonight will be on me” he said and that got them all laughing and throwing words of praise at him.

“Have it sir ” One of his employees said as he gave him a glass of wine.

Romeo hated wasting his time on things like this. He uses his time wisely and make good use of it and for the first time he is wasting it by partying here all because of Marie.

He knew every of it was worth it and to top it all he was enjoying the attention he was getting from his employees and also the fun games they were playing.

“It’s your chance now, go to her” Blake whispered into his ears and his eyes searched for Marie only to find her sitting alone eating her food.

He stood up and went to where she was seated.

“Hello” he said as he stared at her but she only looked at him to look away.

“My eyes are all puffy from crying” she said as she tried to wipe the tears away but instead Charles did it himself.

His hands was still on her wet cheeks when he pulled out an envelope.

“List of some of the vegetables we need” he told her.

“I want you to take it to our production company” he told her softly.

“But the production company is a little far from here” she told him and he nodded.

“You need the trip to think and get to rest for today. All you have to do is to get there and make an order for the vegetables which would be brought here through a carrier” Charles told her.

“You can do that by calling some……”

“I can do that by calling for someone but I want you to take the day off today. You need it and what better way than for you to go a day trip ” he said taking the resignation from her hand.

“No buts, just go and who knows you might change your mind when you return” he told her softly.

“It’s just a one day trip, it certainly wouldn’t change my mind” she said as she decided then and there to leave.

Romeo roughen his hair out of frustration, he had been overwhelmed by jealousy that he let his emotions take over. He didn’t even get to ask her why she was crying earlier.

“I don’t love her, I might want and desire her but I don’t love her” Romeo said trying to convince himself with his words knowing deep down that Blake is right.

“If you don’t love her then why are you upset about the divorce, give her the divorce afterall she’s not the real Develene, give her the divorce and set her free” Blake told him.

“Never! I won’t ever give her the divorce she wants” Romeo said fiercely and Blake smiled.

“See! You love her, you won’t be this determined to keep a girl by your side” Blake told him triumphantly.

“Your right! I love Marie but she doesn’t wants a divorce and as soon as Develene returns, she intends to leave me. What do you think I should do?” Romeo asked.

“I got to the bus stop and found a colleague of mine in tears and knowing that girls tend to do crazy things if they’ve been hurt, I decided to follow and am glad I did” he said.

“I wasn’t going to kll myself” she told him.

“Really? Then how would you explain what just happened a while ago? The car was definitely horning but your mind was some where else” he said.

“I must admit that I wasn’t paying attention but I wasn’t going to kll myself” she told him.

“I just don’t like my space being taken by a woman and to be honest your food are really tasteless” he said reminding her of her ordeal again.

“Your right! My food is tasteless and I don’t think it will ever be good which is why have decided to quit” she told him and this stopped him in his tracks.

“Your quitting?” He asked and she nodded.

“You must be thrilled right? You’ve always wanted me gone and now that have finally decide to leave, you should feel great about it” Marie told him.

“Why are you suddenly quitting?” Charles asked.

Charles was still watching her walk on when he noticed a piece of paper on the floor.

Somehow she had gotten into his head, into his skin which got him wanting her for himself.

He turned to stare at her and this time there was nothing stopping him from touching her face.

Her skin felt soft and smooth and when his fingers trailed to her lips, he wanted to kss it but the thought of Marie’s stricken face stopped him from doing so.

Instead he pushed her away from him, not too hard but the push had ended up making Marie fall off the bed.

“Are you okay?” He asked as he sat up starring at Marie who was sitting on the floor touching her shoulder.

“You did that on purpose didn’t you?” She asked as she stood up glaring at him.

“I didn’t…..I just….why were you in my bed?” He asked instead while trying to hide his feelings.

“You might not believe me but I actually slept on your bed to keep you warm, you were cold and……”

“You should have ignored me, you should have pretended not to see me. I always handle whatever illness I have on my own, who the h’ll are you to feel concern about me?” He snapped at her.

He knew he was being rude and cruel with his words but the thought of wanting her drove him to say things he didn’t mean.

He felt like a jerk and he felt bad for having lashed out at her when she had only been helping him.

And even when he went to work that day he kept feeling that way. There were several times that he had picked up the phone to call for her just so he could apologise but he keeps on stopping himself.

The door opened and Blake walked in starring at his friend intently.

The first place he went to was the kitchen where he confirmed that Marie hadn’t come to work.

Its late in the evening and she hadn’t shown up for work, where could she be? He thought as he walked out calling her on his phone.

Not wanting to drive, he got his chauffeur to drive asking him to take him to his pent house.

He dialled her number for the fifth time and she finally picked.

“Where the h’ll are you?” He asked feeling very worried.

“Just out doing something” she replied but he noticed her voice sounded a bit wobble.

“Doing what? You didn’t even show up at work?” He accused.

“Work. I should have known that it would be the only reason you would call me” she said again.

“Marie I……” He stopped talking when he noticed her sitting at the bus stop. He told the driver to wait and when he was about to get out of the car, he noticed her crying which got him seating in his car again.

Staying back in the car and with his phone still his ear, he asked

“Are you okay Marie?”

“Of course I am……” By now Marie hadn’t notice his car parked at the other streets and Romeo watched as she wipe away her tears.

“You don’t have to worry, I will be back at the penthouse and I won’t be running away, am married to you after all” she said.

“You know am not talking about……” He didn’t get to finish his words because she end the call.

He stayed in his car watching her cry, what could have happened? He thought as he got out of the car wanting to go to her but he stopped when he saw a man moving towards her and that man turned out to be Charles, the head chef in his company.

“I better go and check it” he said as he got out of the car and into the rain before she could tell him to use an umbrella.

“Seems like we’ve bumped into a stone and the car has turned faulty because of it, we will have to call a toll truck and wait right here for it, if it hadn’t been for the rain, we would have looked for a taxi” he explained as soon as he was back into the car dripping wet.

“So we will have to wait in your car?” She asked and he turned to look at her.

“Do you know somewhere else we might stay?” He asked and she chose to ignore that question.

He searched through a bag and found a spare towel he always keep in his bag, he was about using it to wipe the water from his head when he noticed that she was curled up on the seat.

“Feeling cold?” He asked.

“Ignore me” Marie told him as she turned her back on him.

“You silly goose” he said as he put the towel over her.

“Don’t you intend to use it?” She asked.

“You need it more, I don’t want you accusing me of pneumonia in the nearest future” he said as he turned away from her.

Marie sat with the towel starring at him, she thought he wouldn’t notice her feeling the cold so why is he suddenly being generous? Is this a way to get back at her for talking back at him?

“Get some rest and stop looking at me, it will take a while before the toll truck gets here” he said softly and Marie shurgged to herself not caring about his reasons and within time she fell asleep.

It was a while later that Romeo opened his eyes, checking the time he saw that an hour has passed since they’ve been stuck on the streets.

He was about sitting up when he saw the towel around him, the last thing he remembered doing was giving it to Marie, did she wake up and put it around him, he thought as he coughed slightly, knowing he was close to having a cold.

He turned to see Marie soundly asleep and somehow he found himself starring at her. She made a baby face while she sleeps which makes her look cute, he thought still starring at her.

He had a yearning to touch her and he was about to do that when his phone began to ring. Quickly he answered and a while later with the help of the toll driver they got a taxi which took them home.

“Is at times like this that I miss Willow” Marie said as soon as they walked into the pent house and that made Romeo scowl at her.

“And why would you miss Willow?” He asked.

“While you were gone for a whole month doing your thing, Willow and I got close and he’s been a good friend, there was a time that I was stuck at the bus stop due the rain and he came all the way to help and……”

“Should I be suspicious of you and Willow?” He asked suddenly while she rolled her eyes at him.

“You are too annoying to talk to, when will Willow return from his trip?” She asked trying to calm her anger.

“I don’t know,why not ask him ” he replied knowing he was acting like a child but he couldn’t care less, the thought of Willow being close to Marie got him infuriated.

“I just might do that” she replied hotly and turned to leave only to hear him sneeze loudly behind her.

“Got a cold?” She asked and he looked up to stare at her.

“Trying to play the caring wife role?” He asked and not bothering to give him an answer, she went to her room.

She didn’t know why he got on her nerve and somehow he seems to enjoy it each time he made her angry. The thought of going to the hospital tomorrow got her feeling worried.

She wondered what the doctor will tell her and that got her feeling restless, she couldn’t sleep and wanting to do something, she left her room on her way to the kitchen when she heard Romeo coughing.

The door to his room was left open and she saw him asleep on his bed but the paleness of his face got her walking into his room to check on him.

Never had she been into his room not even when he traveled, she had always followed his instructions which was to stay away from his room and things that have to do with him but tonight is different.

“You are burning up Romeo” she muttered as she touched his forehead.

“I will be fine” he replied softly with his eyes still closed.

“What do you mean by you will be fine? Your burning up badly and at this rate it might get worse,I will be back” she said as she left his room still dressed in her cotton night dress.

She arrived a while later with a water and towel which she used in wiping his head and also a drug for cold which she forced him to take.

It was in the early hours of the morning and there was still no sign of him getting well, she was tempted to phone for a doctor but stopped herself when she thought of an idea.

She got into bed and layed beside him hoping that her warm body will at least do a thing to bring the fever down. Marie was still thinking of ways to get his fever down when she slept off.
