The first sight I bumped into is a tiny girl, with brunette hair and blue eyes. She looks familiar and it took some seconds for me to recognize she is Dove, Dove Bellewood. She use to come here with her mom when she was a kid, nothing changed in her appearance over the years except she increased in a little height and maybe grew b*obs.
She looks at me and I notice the look of surprise mixed with shock and I can guess what’s in her mind.
“Derek, there you are. You’re back early, I thought your practice ends by 5 pm” My mom was walking towards us and she stood beside Dove. I turned my head from the brunette girl to my mom.
“I asked for permission to leave, heard we were having visitors so I came to say hi” I looked at Dove and ruffle her hair. She looks like a little puppy, even though I’m not a puppy lover, I just can’t help it.
“Don’t do that” she frown at me. “I’m not a kid” she mumbles afterwards.
“Look like one to me, you aren’t sixteen years old yet” I tease her, a smirk playing on my lips.
“I’m not but I will be this month” She huffed before dragging her luggage to the direction of the stairs. I watch as she leaves before shaking my head and going to meet Aunt Lauren in the kitchen.
“Welcome Aunt” I greet her.
“Derek” She turned from the sink to me and her eyes lingered on me for a while. She had a surprise look, the same one Dove had when she saw me. I’m very sure they must be wondering about my change of appearance. I use to look decent back then with no tattoos but I’m growing up now, I’m not who I was anymore, and I can never be.
“Is everything good Derek?” She ask me, looking concerned.
“Did you assume everything is bad?” I answer her question with my question and she shook her head probably realizing that I’m twenty now and I can look however I want, I don’t have to look like that good boy who has his shirt tucked in his pants just like everyone wants him to be.
“Help me with the plates please,” She ask and I helped her. Aunt Lauren never changes, she’s always the best when it comes to the kitchen. We haven’t started eating yet but the house was polluted with the sweet smell of food.
Moments later, time has gone by and it was evening. Everyone where in the dining, Dove and Taylor sat together, whispering things to themselves while I was alone, it sucks being the only boy sometimes.
“So what’s going on this summer, what do you kids plan to do now that everyone is an adult?” Lauren started the evening conversation.
“What do you mean mom, we don’t need to do anything, we’ll just play on the beach like before. Right? Taylor” Dove said looking at Taylor.
“Actually… I was planning to fill in a work space at the beach but you were coming over so I thought I should wait for you” Taylor says.
“So you’re saying we should go work at the beach together?” Dove ask and Taylor nods
“I hope you guys aren’t coming over to my side?” I slide in and Taylor only sticks her tongue and I roll my eyes.
Dinner was going well, Mom and Aunt Lauren talked about some things. I was enjoying my food but I could feel eyes on me, I look in Dove’s direction and she immediately bent her head. I smile to myself, this little girl is really bad at hiding.
After dinner, Taylor and Dove went to the kitchen to do the dishes while Aunt Lauren and Mom went to their room to talk about girls’ stuff or should I say women’s kinds of stuff. I couldn’t sleep or relax. I was trying to watch TV earlier but I couldn’t concentrate, it was all boring so I did what I always do every night.
I sat by the lake in front of the house, smoking my cigarettes, watching the smoke puff into the air and disappear just like how people come and people go. Life is freàking short.
“You smoke too” I heard a familiar voice and footsteps trailing behind me. I know who was coming so I didn’t bother to look back and continued smoking.
“Smoking is bad you know” Dove sat beside me.
I chuckle but didn’t stop.
“What’s going on Derek, you don’t look…” She bit her lips. Of course, I decide to do a little change of style and people won’t stop being all up in my business.
“Aren’t you planning to continue?” I ask her.
“I’m not judging you or anything but you look different. I thought you hated the idea of tattoos and smoking and piercings” I looked at her face when she said that, it was squeezed in a confused way.
I decide to check her out, I haven’t had the time to do so since she came back. Her eyes never stopped shining blue, bright blue like it use to be years back, her face round and small, her heart-shaped lips pink.
She looks like a good girl, the one who loves to impress mummy and I scoffed a little. I wish I was like her, I wish I didn’t get to change but screw that.
“Things change and smoking is not that bad, tattoos are not that bad, it’s hot” I shrugged, licking my lips at the same time my lips rang and I noticed her eyes peeked at it for a fast second.
“It’s not hot” She mumbled.
Liar.
“That was not what you thought while checking me out at dinner” I smirk and her cheeks turn red, like ripping tomatoes. I laughed and smashed my cigarettes on the space of the stone I was sitting on before standing up.
She looks up at me, she’s so tiny, so small, so innocent. Anyone would want to have her in their arms and protect her.
“Sometimes life doesn’t go the you want so do everything you can do now. Live your life and don’t let it live you or you might regret it in the future” I told her, she kept looking up at me like that and I resist every urge to pinch her small chin, it should fit right in my hands but unfortunately my hands were glued in my pocket.
“Goodnight Dove” I smiled at her, she looks just like her name, pure and angelic.
“Goodnight” she replies and I walk away.
