Nkem was preparing her husband’s breakfast while he took his bath to leave for work, when her mother in-law walked into the kitchen with the new woman she brought for her husband.

It wasn’t a new occurrence for mama to bring a woman each time she was visiting them, hoping to force her son into getting one pregnant, neither was it new that her husband was always ignoring the women just like he was doing to this new one, until they got fed up and left.

“Good morning Mama” she greeted respectfully, bowing as she greeted.

“Good morning sir’ her mother in-law replied, pulling the woman into the kitchen with her.

Nkem turned around to see what her mother in-law was greeting, but found no one.

“What are you pretending looking around for? Are you not a man? Or were you expecting that I greet you as a woman when both by your anatomical makeup and your absolute control over my son, you’re nothing but a man?

“Tell me Ike, because I know you’re not Nkem, but Ikechukwu, don’t you deserve to be greeted with the sir title, or do I have to wait until you become a Knight in the church before I greet you sir?

“All my mates had their sons marry women who birthed them grandchildren, my own son chose to marry a man like himself and you think you will keep fōōling me with the “mama” you’re calling me when you refused to give me grandchildren to call me mama” Joe’s mother lashed out on Nkem in her usual àntagonistic manner.

“Mama, I didn’t refuse to give you grandchildren. I’ve been trying to conceive for twenty years without success, mama, it’s not easy on me too” she told her mother in-law in her never too angry way.

“Oh I see! So because you have sold your womb to the devìl, because you won’t be able to ever conceive, I, Uka will now have to dië without grandchildren? Tufikwa! (Good forbid)” mama shouted, making the woman with her begin to laugh.

“No mama, Joe is going to give you grandchildren, and that’s because I know that even though I haven’t been able to conceive, I can do something about this our situation” she told mama.

“Please spare me all the drama. You have been trying to make him give me those grandchildren since forever, without actually doing it, so please quit the games” mama told her meanly.

“Mama, even if I can’t give him the children he needs, a new wife will most certainly save us all the misery” Nkem told her mother in-law.

Mama was about to lash out at her again when the meaning of what she had just said sank in.

“Wait, did you just say a new wife? I knew it! I knew you’d come around some day and quit with the pretense.

“You must seen that fighting to send Martha away from this house would only be in vain, seeing how beautiful and fruitful she looks” mama said, refusing to be nice to her, even after she could see all the pains Nkem was going through.

“Mama, I don’t know why Martha is here with you, but I know my husband isn’t having anything to do with her, because he has got for himself a new wife” Nkem told her mother in-law, and turned to check what she was doing before,making a mental note to remind Mandy to be quick with whatever plan she said she had for her.

“Mama, don’t tell me you believe all these cràp she just said about Joe taking another wife.

“The Joe that has been screàming and threatêning to màim and crucify me if I didn’t leave his home since yesterday doesn’t seem like one who has chosen to take another wife.

“This woman just wants to keep buying time, keep throwing you around until your maker calls you home and you then have to go without as much as a grandchild to sweep your grave. She has a bàd plan mama” Martha said, sounding as despêrate as she was to smûggle her way into Joe’s house.

“Martha or whatever she says your name is, the only reason I have been ignoring you since you came into my kitchen is because I don’t wish to disrespect mama, but if you keep getting involved in my family matters, I’ll be forced to…” Nkem was saying but Martha cut her short.

“You’ll be forced to do what Ikenna the man? You think you’re going to throw me out like you threw the others out?

“If you must know, I’m going nowhere because this is my husband’s house as well! Mama ensured that my bride price was paid in full before I came to the city with her just to ensure he wouldn’t throw me out as well, so you see, I’m Joe’s new wife!

“You either accept me peacefully as his new wife, the one who’ll birth him children, or you make me force you into a corner that suits a barrèn woman like you!” Martha said brazenly, only to turn around and find Joe standing behind her, looking at her menacingly.

“Tell me the rubbîsh she just spewed isn’t true mama! Wait, Mama, you truly got her married traditionally? Mama you went ahead to perform traditional rites on a woman when you clearly know my stand on polygamy? You have crossed the line this time! Believe me when I say that you’re way past my bottom line!

“And you young lady, you called my wife names in my house, in her kitchen and to my hearing.
I’m going to make you regret the day you met my mother. Yes! I’m going to make you wish you diëd a day before you met my mother!” he told her with a cold snarl and pushed past her to reach for his wife who was looking at h8s mother with tears flowing down her cheeks.

“Come on baby, let’s go now!” he told his wife, helping her put off the gas cooker and walked her out of the kitchen while his mother stood by, watching in confusion.

The Joe she knew would have had Martha thrown out of the house the moment he met her quarrelling with his wife, but he had just walked away, letting her remain in the kitchen.

“What now mama? What are we going to do?” Martha asked mama in fear, not knowing what Joe meant with the threàt.

“Forget it Martha, I know what to do. He’s my son, and I know how to get him to calm down.

“Your duty now is to ensure you get pregnant as soon as you can, and all these attachment to that barrèn woman will fade away” mama told Martha and made her follow her to her room.

Joe tried to pacify his wife as much as he could before he left for work that day, hoping to take her out later that day and make her forget her pains, but he was shocked to return that day to find his wife nowhere around the house.

“Where are you Nkem?” Joe asked again, his heart beating wildly in his ribcage, after calling her several times but without response.

“I have told you before Joe, I’m done fighting this vain fïght. Your mother is right, she wants a grandchild and I can’t give her.

“Now she’s gotten you a wife, one who is ready to fight me in your house, with your mother standing by to lend her all the support she’ll need.

“Forget it Joe, I have no place in your house any longer, so you’ll have to move on” Nkem said, crying bitterly.

“For the last time Nkem, tell me where the hêll you are before I do something stupîd” Joe bellowed, not giving a dãmn that she had been insisting that he let her be.

Mandy had been listening to them as they spoke because Nkem had refused to answer his calls initially, and he kept calling until Mandy picked the call and placed it in front of her, with the speaker turned on.

“She’s in my house!” Mandy spat at once, making Nkem go màd with her.

“What was that for? How could you do that when I have told you in clear terms that I do not want him to find me?

“Mandy, I’m tired of fighting, I’m tired of hoping against hope that I’ll get pregnant one day, when it isn’t happening.

“If I continue to stay, he won’t give the other woman a chance to give him the children he deserves to have, so I don’t want to keep forcing him to suffer on my account!” Nkem complained in tears.

“Quit being childish Nkem. The man is yours, just like his wealth. I was expecting you to see the opportunity in all of these and get yourself positioned as his wife, and not running away, leaving your home for a total stranger.

“Don’t worry, let him come here to get you, and we’ll kïll two birds with a stone” Mandy told her friend, with a mischievous smile

“Kïll two birds with a stone? How do you mean?” Nkem asked her.

“Leave it to me Nkem. All you have to do, is refuse to go home with him when he gets here. Your husband that I know, won’t go home without you, and that’s when we make the move!” Mandy explained.

Nkem did nothing but nod her head. She wasn’t planning to go home with him after all.
