Nkem walked into the house, got a few personal items and walked out of her house in tears.
She recalled how her mother in-law had mocked her as he carried her box of clothes and some shoes she had chosen to go with.
“Where is our wife going to? Running away already, just because the main wife is making her see how quickly a married woman should get pregnant?” she had asked her.
“Mama, from the first day I met you, from the very moment Joe introduced me to you, you have been antagonizing me for no justifiable reason.
“I have tried to keep my home training and to remain respectful even when you have shown how undeserving you are.
“There hasn’t been a day you didn’t show me hàtred and bitterness, but I have always tried to show you that I see you as my mother, since you’re the mother of the ma I love, but not any more mama.
“I’m leaving this house today, but in happiness that the God if fruitfulness has visited me
“Yes! The God that allows a man fetch water with a basket to disgrace the cup that feels we cannot fetch water without it has visited me.
“And today, I’m going away for my sanity. Not because I can’t stand up to you and the back stàbber I got for a wife for my husband, but because you all don’t deserve all the energy it’ll take to put you in you place.
“So I’ll allow nature to handle it all. I’ll allow the God who has chosen this time to answer me, to respond to all the mockery” she told mama.
“If I didn’t know you’re as fruitless as the fig tree Jesus cursed, I would have imagined that you could be pregnant, like you’re insinuating, but nwokem (my man), you can’t fōōl me” mama told her
“For someone who got just one son, when her co wife got six sons, you’re sounding too much like a demigod!
“You’re not in the position to decide who is fruitful and who is not. Because finally, God didn’t ask your permission or validation before He blessed me. Goodbye mam, and I hope you find peace living with the one you call wife now” Nkem said, rubbing her stomach as she spoke.
She held her tears from falling while she spoke with the woman, but as soon as he stepped out of the house and walked into her car, she couldn’t hold the tears any longer.
The tears continued to flow as she thought of how she could have been partying with her husband over the good news they’ve been waiting for, for twenty years, and how the little Farida she had brought into her house by herself, had scattered her home, and turned her husband against her.
Jackie was shocked to hear the outcome of her visit to her husband’s house, finding it hard to believe that the Joe they have always known could allow himself to be manipulated like Farida and her mother had done.
“What do we do now? Joe must be told that you’re pregnant and if what you said is what happened, then he’ll certainly not take a look at those papers you dropped for him.
“So how do we make him know that you’re pregnant?” Jackie asked her friend.
“There’s nothing I can do about that. I’ve tried my best Jackie. You may not know how much I have gone through these few days, but you’ve got to know that there’s a limit to what a human can take” Nkem told Jackie.
The two friends talked for sometime and Nkem insisted she wasn’t going back to the house.
She decided to move into one of her husband’s apartments in town, but agreed to send him a message to inform him of her pregnancy since Jackie insisted that she told him about the pregnancy herself.
Her husband’s estate agent got a call the next day and before noon, Nkem had moved into one of the apartments.
Meanwhile, back in Joe’s house, he found out that his wife had moved out, and his mother told him about what had happened between them.
“That woman made some insinuations about being pregnant, and I don’t know why I felt she could truly be pregnant” his mother told him.
“Mama, I don’t want to hear about it. My husband and I are not foöls to believe everything anyone says.
“She can fōōl some idiôts, but not us. How can she be pregnant all of a sudden because I’m pregnant, when for twenty whole years, she couldn’t get pregnant?” Farida asked.
“Wait Farida, did you just call me an idiòt? Joe, did your wife just insult me and you’re standing as if all is well?” mama asked, shaking uncontrollably.
“She didn’t insult you mama. She was asking to know how Nkem can suddenly get pregnant now?
“And I share her sentiments. Nkem is just trying to create problems for us, and I think you of all people shouldn’t buy it. She wasn’t your friend before mama, when did all these things start?” Joe replied.
“Are you serious? You share her sentiments? She could open her mouth to insült me and you think there’s nothing wrong about it?
“I don’t care what you think, but whatever it is, if she’s pregnant, I don’t want my grandchild out of this house.
“You must find her and bring her home. She’s your wife as much as this girl is. I don’t have any personal problems with her, I was just worried about her not being pregnant after so many years, and that’s not my fault.
“She has been a very respectful woman and I can’t forget how nice she has always been, even when I made life difficult for her.
“And if she’s pregnant, then even I will seek for her and ensure I bring her back home” mama told her son before she walked away
Farida looked at her disappearing figure and then at Joe. “Are you going to sit by and watch her do that? You’re going to allow her bring that vilè woman and give her a chance to hūrt my child and I? You can be sure that I’ll leave you and this house as soon as she comes” Farida said and stormed off, to go call her mother.
“Wait Farida, wait! I know what to do. Please don’t go” Joe said, running after Farida.
