‘That’s the essence of this vacation Efua Kelechi.. I will make you like me’

I immediately push Lotanna off and run out of the pool not bothering shake off the water on me before dashing inside, droplets of water following my every move.

Did he just say what I think he said, or probably I was hallucinating.. I mean why would he say something like that? To me of all people? This is ridiculous.. Why am I even thinking about this? I should just go back out there and slam it to his face that I do not like him and will never like him!

But who am I deceiving? Every fibre in my traitorous body reacts to his every touch like nails to magnet. Even just hearing his voice has my heartbeat going into a frantic overdrive. This is so complicated, because I cannot fall for this man.. No I should fall in love with him. This is not right! Certainly not.

“Oh my! Look how you are dripping like a wet chicken, are you okay?” I turn around to see a young girl staring questioningly at me.

“Who are you?” I ask her.

“Actually my name is Itohan.. Ewu’s daughter.. I’m the eldest twin… What about you.. I have not seen you around here before.. Did you come with Tanna?”

“Yes, i came with Prince Lotanna… My name is Efua and I am Lotanna’s bodyguard” I say and start walking into my room to put off my wet clothings, Itohan keeps following me.

“Wow… I’ve never seen a female warrior before… You are the first”

I smile. “Am I? Because I know of many” I glance at her since she is already beside me. Her face beams and I see that striking resemblance with Ewu. “Where is your twin?” I ask.

Itohan shrugs. “She went out with Buchi and hasn’t returned since… She did not even come to the shop today..”

I push my door open and Itohan skips inside and I follow her, closing the door and making sure to lock it, trying not to think about how Lotanna entered and saw me half-naked. “What’s your sister’s name? And who is Buchi”

Just so you know, I’m actually keeping up this conversation with Itohan just to get my mind of Lotanna and the things he said, not to talk of what has happened between the both of us. Well, I think this is working, Itohan’s distraction I mean.

“Her name is Ivie.. And Buchi is her wayward friend” Itohan says in reply to my question.

“Wayward friend? How do you know she is wayward.. You shouldn’t judge a person like that” I pull off my cloth and let it fall to the floor in a heap beside me leaving me in my wet under dress. I look at the clothes on the bed and I sigh because there is absolutely nothing I can wear out of it.

“I’m not judging her, but everybody knows her in this side of the kingdom… She sleeps with every man she deems fit… I even heard she has flushed out ten babies from her womb.. I won’t be surprised if she can’t concieve when she finally gets married” Itohan says with a scoff.

“You really do not like the girl I see” I observe.

“Absolutely.. I hate her with every fibre in me”

I look at Itohan who is dangling her legs rhythmically on my bed. “Hey Itohan, do you know where I can get clothes that will fit into me?” I ask.

“You did not bring clothes”

“Unfortunately yes… And your mother’s clothes are falling off me”

Itohan laughs. “I can imagine.. Wait let me rummage the house for something.. I would be right back… Just don’t move an inch” she says and dashes out.

Minutes later she is back in, with her hands stuffed with clothes.. But.. “These are male clothes” I say.

“Yes Tanna says you should have them, they are his” she replies and winks at me before dumping them on the bed. I gape at her.

“You told Lotanna I did not have clothes? Why would you do that?”

Itohan shrugs. “I did not tell him… He told me to give you when he saw me.. I swear I did not mention it to him… But is there anything going on between you two? Tanna kept asking if you are okay”

I shake my head instantly. “Of course not… I work for him, you shouldn’t have thoughts like that about us.. That’s so ridiculous” I reply quickly blinking my eyes and grabbing a black shirt from the clothes.

“Well even if there’s is anything, it isn’t like you would tell me… Very stupid of me to ask.. Oh Itohan, why are you so stupid” she hits her head repeatedly. I look at her and start to laugh at her weird behavior.

Itohan raises her eyes and gives me a wide smile. “I made you laugh Efua… Aren’t I amazing” she remarks sassily twisting a braid of her hair.

I laugh again. “Of course you are”.

The day passes by in a blur, with me avoiding Lotanna every single time I get. Ewu and Itohan kept eyeing me suspiciously all day but I would avoid their eye contact. They had better not start suspecting anything between Lotanna and I.

It is evening time and I have just finish helping Itohan to shell melons. “Thank you Efua… Ivie will be so jealous when she finds out that I already shelled all of mine” Itohan grins at me, I grin back.

I get up from my sitting position on the floor, dusting the back of the shirt. Did I forger to say I love the feel of Lotanna’s shirt on me, I love the way it falls way past my knees and the manly scent of his that it emits.

Oh Efua! You are doing it again.. Thinking of him.

I grab my sword from the floor. “I’m going out, I’ll be back soon” I tell Itohan.

“It’s okay.. But when it starts to darken, pls come real quick because it is not safe out there”

“Of course, I will” I walk out of the room closing the door behind me, but then I stop on my tracks, simply because he—Lotanna is standing before me.

“Lotanna” I choke out.

“You’ve been.avoiding me Efua… Aren’t you supposed to guard me”

I bit my lip, trying to look anywhere but at him, his hands claim my cheek as he steps closer, invading my private space. He tilts my chin up so my eyes will meet his. “You do not get to leave my presence until I tell you to, Efua” he says.

“I do not like to be bossed around Lotanna” I reply maintaining a fierce look.

“It doesn’t work that way anymore. . . Did you not tell Itohan that you work for me?”

“You were eavesdropping?”

“No, I was watching you…” He brings his face closer to mine and my breath hitches. This is an hallway for crying out loud, Itohan or even Ewu might be around somewhere.

“Lotanna” I whisper, slowly I push his hands off from my chin and take a step back. “You shouldn’t do this” I say.

“What do you mean?”

“Have you forgotten you have a betrothed!” I snap angrily and then storm off. Why am I getting all emotional now?
