‘My son, what sacrilege have you committed?’, Amadi asked on our way home.

I opened my mouth but nothing seemed to be coming out from my mouth..

THE CONTINUATION:

‘Ichie Amadi, it’s too heavy to say out’, I finally stuttered.

‘You have to say it out no matter how heavy it’s. Because the destiny of your marriage now lies in your hands,’ Amadi said.

I heaved a heavy deep breath before saying a word: ‘The bush has an ear. Ichie, when we get home, I will tell you everything that happened..’

‘No problem’, he paused. ‘It’s sunset already. We have to walk fast because I have a meeting to attend’, Amadi said.

‘Which meeting again?’, I asked.

‘The family meeting.’

‘Okay’.

‘But you have to present in the meeting today since you are around’.

‘It’s necessary?’, I had to ask him.

‘You have to. Since your father and your brother are no more, you are now the head of the family.’

‘Let’s be going. When we get home first..’

We continued the journey. I wallowed in the ocean of thought. How do I do this? What would be my mother’s reaction? Will my wife forgive me for my atrocities? I was asking myself.

Few moments later, we got home. Of the truth, I was afraid to speak out. But I had no option than to tell him the truth. Amadi was one person I couldn’t lie to because he was more of a doctor to me. So I need to be truthful to him.

We ended up in his Obi. He brought out the remaining palm for us to water the tasty beast inside of us. Few minutes, food was served to us by his wife. It was roasted yam and oil sauce. The delicious oil sauce was made of local ingredients — utazi leaf, ugba( African oil bean seed) pepper and a little touch of salt.

I managed to eat with Amadi despite the fact I have lost my appetite for food. Though I did not eat much. But I took a lot of the palm wine just to raise my morale so as to enable me to speak.

‘Ichie Amadi, indeed I have committed an atrocity. I don’t even know where to start telling you this..’

‘My son, please speak out and let me know where to come into this situation. The earlier the better’.

‘Ichie Amadi, you know I stayed with my brother for a very long time before finally getting an apartment of my own. My late brother, Jude, is a man who spent more of his time outside of his home because of his business and political engagements,’ I paused. ‘But along the line, something happened between me and his wife, Susan. Ichie, it wasn’t of my will but Susan lured me into it. I-I-I..’, I began stammering.

‘I-I-I what? Why the stammer all of a sudden? What happened?’, he paused. ‘I don’t want to believe what I am thinking’, Amadi asked with curiosity amidst disappointment that clearly started clouding in his look.

‘Ichie Amadi, it’s exactly what you are thinking. Susan lured me to the bed with the promise of giving me a job,’ I sighed. ‘I fell victim as a result of my desperation and naiveness.’

‘Aru! Abomination! How could you? Your brother’s wife?’, Amadi exclaimed while snapping his fingers.

I buried my head in shame. I was full of regret.

‘Ichie, I must confess, I am the owner of my brother’s children..’

‘You mean the Umu Ejima(twins)?’, he asked in surprise.

I nodded my head.

‘Aru! This is a big sacrilege,’ he said while still snapping his fingers in disbelief.

Silence prevailed. Even the birds ceased their chorus after hearing my abominable acts. I could read the disappointment on Amadi’s face. As he was shaking his legs, snapping his fingers and shrugging off his shoulders in disbelief.

‘Who else is aware of this abomination?’, Amadi broke the silence.

‘Nobody except me and Susan’, I replied.

Amadi heaved a heavy sigh before continuing: ‘While, the deed has been done. What we should focus on now is the appeasement and atonement’, he paused. ‘Go to Afor market and buy kolanut. By sunrise tomorrow morning, pray with the kolanut. First, seek forgiveness from the creator. Then, call upon our ancestors, all the spirits in our vicinity..(he mentioned them), the spirits of your late father and that of your brother, seek for their forgiveness too. Break the kola nut after the prayer and throw the robes on the ground, summoning them to come eat’, he paused. ‘You have to visit both your father and brother’s graves. Speak to them. Ask for their forgiveness. Tell them how sorry you are. Do this the same way you would have done it if they were still alive. Do this at night or anytime you can focus and be uninterrupted. Get comfortable. Be focused and think of the person, see them in your mind and remember them as they were,’ he paused, sipping his palm wine before continuing: ‘My son, in your mind, recall what you did that you feel sorry for. In your mind, visualize how it would have hurt the person if they were alive to hear this. Feel your own sorrow for having hurt them. In your mind, ask the person to forgive you. Sit quietly and breathe evenly. Relax and be at peace and feel forgiveness come into your heart. You may have to do this practice more than once, but it will work.’ Amadi concluded.

‘Ichie Amadi, is that all?’, I asked inquisitively.

‘That’s not all. These rituals are just the beginning. We still have other rituals to carry out’, he paused. ‘Secondly, you have to confess your sins to your wife and your mother. Their forgiveness is very paramount on this quest. After all these, come home for the final rituals,’ he concluded.

‘But can I start the ritual tonight or do I have to pray tomorrow morning first before visiting their graves?’, I had to ask.

‘You can visit their graves tonight. As for the kola nut prayer, you have to do that at sunrise tomorrow morning. I hope you know that the prayer has to be outdoor, not indoor?’.

‘Yes, I know’, I replied.

‘The journey of a thousand miles begins with a step. Go home. Do the ones I asked you to do, then we move to the next level’, Amadi concluded.

‘Thank you very much Ichie Amadi. I really appreciate you for your concern and efforts so far..,’ I appreciated him so much.

After all said and done that evening, I left for the market to buy the kola nut against the morning ritual while Amadi left for the meeting.

At night, I had a quiet time with my father and my brother in their graves respectively. Indeed I felt relieved and a little bite forgiven after my silent moments with them.

The following morning, I did the morning prayer with the kola nut. At night, I repeated the same rituals — appealing for forgiveness from the dead — and the feeling was exceptional.

The following morning, I left the village to Onitsha to meet with my mother to confess my sin to her and ask for forgiveness having found peace with the dead.

I got to Onitsha that morning. My mother welcomed me very well. She served me food but I refused eating.

‘Nnaa, is everything okay?’, she queried in surprise.

‘Mama, when a fowl has committed an abdominal act, the ground would chase after the foul..’

‘My son, what happened? What have you done?’, she interrupted.

‘Mama, I have done the unimaginable. I have committed a big sacrilege. Please forgive me..’

‘Steven forgive you for what? What have you done? Talk to me and stop giving me high blood pressure,’she yelled.

‘Is about Susan..’

‘What about that w|tch?’, she interrupted.

‘T-t-the twins..’, I stammered.

‘Those bastards..what about them?’, she cut me short.

‘Umu Ejima are not a bastard. They a-ar-ar..’ I was stuttering when she interrupted again.

‘They are what? Stop stammering and talk to me’, she shouted.

‘They are my children, not bastards’, I spilled out.

‘What? How?,’ she asked in disbelief.

‘I am responsible…’

‘You mean you pregnanted your brother’s wife, ehn?’, she asked amid disbelief and confusion.

I had to go down on my knees ‘I am sorry mama. It was the dev|l..’, I was pleading.

‘Dev||?..’

‘Susan lured me into this when I was staying with them. Mama it was the dev||’s handwork..’

She kept silent, watching me in disbelief, trying to digest what I just said now.

‘Steven, I don’t understand. Are you joking or what?’, she asked in confusion.

‘I was having an affair with her right under my brother’s roof’, I said.

‘Steven you are a disgrace to this family. How can you sleep with your brother’s wife? So you too contributed to his death? How can you allow the devil to use you this way? I am very much ashamed of you..’, she was grieving amidst tears and pains.

‘Mama, please forgive me. I don’t know what came over me. Please have mercy upon me..’, I was pleading.

‘Steven, I regret the day you came into my life. Had I known, I would have abandoned you there to be eaten by the hungry pigs. Why have you come into my life to cause me pain and anger? Steven why?..’, she was saying in regret.

‘Mama, I know that I am not worthy to be called your son again but please find a place in your heart to forgive me..’, I pleaded.

I pleaded with her for forgiveness but she refused to forgive me. Instead, she asked me to leave and never to come back. At first, I refused but she insisted on me leaving her house. To the extent she started shouting and crying loudly, attracting the neighbors. Then I had to leave amid confusion and frustration.

I was wandering aimlessly in the street of Onitsha like a mad man. I don’t know what to do next. To go back home to continue pleading with the old woman for forgiveness? Or to go back to Lagos and face my wife? But the worst part of all was that If my mother could react this way, then how would my wife take it. I was asking myself questions upon questions.

I later decided on going back to plead with my mother again. But immediately she sighted me coming, she locked me outside and began shouting I should go and never come back. Before I could know what was happening, her cry and shout started attracting neighbors again.

At some point, I had to leave. I called Ichie Amadi to inform him of the development.

‘You don’t expect that old widow to take it easy on you. What you committed was a big taboo,’ he paused. ‘But go back to Lagos and face your wife. Allow the old woman to absorb the shock. I will speak to her later. She will get through it..’, Amadi was saying to me.

I left for Lagos that night. The journey was horrors and nightmares. I was in a total disarray. Millions of questions raced in my head. If my mother could react this way, how then would my wife handle it? This particular question kept echoing into my head every now and then.

My worst fear was: confessing to my wife would probably prompt her into leaving the marriage. And I was very much afraid to lose her because she was all I have now.

Or should I keep the secret away from Lucy, my wife?

I contemplated amid fear, confusion and frustration..
