I tried to shake off the feeling and urge to hold Miss Sola, but it seemed to be getting more overwhelming as she kept laughing while she told me a story I wasn’t even listening to.
Miss Sola had always been a choice woman in our organization for almost all the men, but I had never paid her attention because my whole mind and being was focused on Madonna.
Plus, I was always too preoccupied with either thoughts of what we had that morning, or what I know I was going to get later that day, to care about the fact that Miss Sola was attractive, not to mention the fact that she was just too uptight!
I have seen men get embarrassed for trying to woo her, and I knew her as one who never socialized with others.
But that night, with her smiling so freely, and trying to make me forget my sorrows, I felt like giving her a thank you kïss.
I must have been looking at her strangely, because she suddenly stopped laughing and told me she wanted to get something for us from her room.
“Please get in bed. I don’t want you touching any of these things before I return. And yes, you’re not allowed to get out of bed until I return, or you’ll spoil the fun.
””I’ll lock the door from outside, so you don’t have to come down from the bed until I bring the stuff over” she told me and rushed out of my room.
I nodded and got in bed, while she waited for me to cover myself with a duvet before she bounced out.
As soon as I heard her lock the door outside, I got out of the bed and quickly stepped out of my clothes because something told me that I needed to be ready by the time she returned.
I waited for Sola to return for so long that I was beginning to feel very sleepy. My eyelids were becoming heavy, and the last thing I remembered was covering up with the duvet again.
When I woke up, Sola was sitting besides me on my bed, and I was more sober. The strong urge to grab her bōõbs was gone, and so was the desire to kiss her.
But, I was recalling what made me drink again, and my heart was breaking.
“Good morning Mr. Andy. You look better now, at least, that funny and strange look is gone. How was your night?” she asked me.
My heart skipped a beat at her words. “Did I do something wrong? Did I act unrestrainedly with her?” I asked myself, my heart thudding in shame.
“Erm Miss Sola… yesterday, I was…” I stuttered, but she held her index finger to her lips.
“It’s okay Mr. Andy, you were just reacting to your situation. I noticed you didn’t want to talk about it, and you were hurting badly, so I had to make you shut out the pains the way I do sometimes.
“Talking about what made you feel so depressed may not really be easy, but it’s always the easiest way to ease your heart of the burden.
“You’re a nice man Mr Andy, and I’d like to have you understand that whenever you feel like talking about it, you have someone who will listen to you and offer you a shoulder to cry on” Sola told me, making me want to cry.
I nodded in agreement to what she had just said and also couldn’t agree less when she suggested that we stayed out in public places, while we talked about anything that caught my fancy, things that interest me and things that could make me forget my troubles.
We went to cinemas, went to water parks and different leisure sites, joking, laughing and talking all day.
I was beginning to see a different side of Sola I have never known, and it was astonishing how very different she was in reality, compared to what I knew about he all along.
From a distance, she had always seemed difficult and unfriendly, but for the few days that we got close, I was beginning to see the friendly, caring and good natured Sola, and she was amazing.
Later that night, we went to the hotel restaurant for dinner, and while we ate and chatted, we looked everything like a couple, because not only had Sola dropped all the resistance she always had on, I was also feeling so good talking and laughing with her, with no restraints whatsoever.
Some crãzy idea about going to the club came up, since we were trying to still spend time together, but in a public place.
I have never been the social type, so I was fīghting the whole time, trying not to embarrass her with the way I was looking at couples dancing with their bodies glued together.
She asked me to dance with her, but I chose to keep drinking because I knew that I know next to nothing about dancing. So she went on to dance while I drank.
I had to dance at some point because I was getting tired of watching the dudes that kept flocking around her for a dance,some getting so daring, they held her waist while they danced as if she belonged to them.
Her eyes were twinkling in amusement as she noticed how clumsily I danced and though she didn’t want to laugh, I could see her eyes laughing as she danced in front of me.
I looked around and began to copy from the dude that was dancing besides us with his partner, holding her waist and pulling her close to me, just like the other guy was doing.
We continued moving slowly to the tunes, and when I didn’t expect it, I saw my dance mentor lift his partner’s face and sealed her lips with his.
I looked back at Miss Sola, and she was looking at me too. Her eyes lashes were batting furiously and her lips trembling, almost as if she was afraid of the look in my eyes.
Then I realized I had suddenly held her a little too tightly. And oh dãmn it, a part of my body had become so hard it was almost boring a hole on her thigh, where it was pressed against.
“I’m sorry Miss Sola, but your lips are quivering” I told her before my lips claimed hers.
Her eyes opened wider in shock for a few seconds, then she shut them as tightly as a little child that had seen a medicine spoon approaching her lips.
My hands left wherever else they had been before and held her face, positioning her mouth well, while mine continued to hold it.
My tongue began to dart in and around her mouth, seeking parts of her mouth, and making her shudder as my lips continued to brush against hers.
At first, she stood immobile, not resisting me, but certainly not responding to the kiss, but her face kept faltering between a frown and creases of her brows.
I was having a blast notwithstanding because the sweet smell of her vanilla hair conditioner kept making a perfect combination with her delicate and feminine perfume, travelling through my nostrils and conjuring bigger desires in me, as I kissed her.
By the time I let her go, we were both panting for air, and she was running away, while I chased after her.
“I’m sorry Miss Sola. I shouldn’t have done that, but I just kinda lost…” I was saying as I caught up with her at the entrance of her room.
“It’s okay Mr. Andy. I don’t really blame you for this. I should have known better than trying to have you forget your troubles, being so free around you, making myself a scàpegoat. You’re a man after all!” she said and ran into her room, locking her door behind her.
“What is this that I have done now? How could I have let the friendship she offered me get messed up because of an impulsive kiss?” I thought unhappily as I walked back into my room.
I tried to reach Sola several times that night, and the days that followed, but she was clearly avoiding me, giving one excuse or the other, why she couldn’t see me.
“Please Sola, whatever it is, you’ll have to come out or I’ll remain outside your door today. I’ve told you that I’m sorry about what happened, but if you’re going to keep treating me this way for my first mistake, then you’re as bãd as I am” the message I sent to her read, and before long, Sola who had told me she went out with her boyfriend, opened the door to talk to me.
I don’t know why, but I pushed past her and walked into her room to be sure she didn’t really have a man in the room.
“Why am I getting so flustered and hurt at the thought of her having a man with her? Seeing her dance with those guys had made me so màd that I had to force myself to dance, even when I knew I could make a mess of myself.
“And now, even when I’m supposed to maintain decorum and try to make amends and make her see that I could be just a harmless friend, my fear of her having a man with her, is making me still act rashly!” I berated myself, after I got in, and found nobody there.
“Look Sola, I know I’ve not been at my best behaviours lately, and I’m sorry. I’ve just been feeling so bad about the other night, and now that we’re returning to Nigeria tomorrow, I do not wish that things remain the way it is now.
“I’m sorry for making you think less of me with the way I acted. But I’m not sorry that I kissed you!
“Yes Sola. I’ve been trying to understand why certain things have been going on in my head, and I’ve come to realize that some things are beyond our control
“And even though I should be sorry that I kissed you, I feel I should treasure that moment that has woken up something in me” I told her, walking closer to her and she kept retreating, until she had no space left between her and the wall again.
I placed my two hands on the wall, on the two sides of her head and looked her in the eyes, trying to make her see what I was saying.
“Mr. Andy, this isn’t right! You’re a married man, married to a young and beautiful girl who loves you just as much as you love her.
“Why are you trying to do this? You’re only missing your wife, and I know the moment you get back to Nigeria, all these will be a thing of the past.
“Why are you risking the love and joy you share with your family because of a momentary passion? Have you stopped to think about how your family will be affected if I allow this fo0lery overwhelm us?
“I have been through a lot Mr Andy, and my decision to keep to myself isn’t because I do not have people who wish to kiss me when they’re away from their wife.
“It’s because I have decided not to have anything I do with the gender that got me engaged, only to secretly wed my best friend with all the money in our joint account” she told me, pain creeping into her eyes.
My hands fell to my sides as the enormity of her words hit me. Yes, I knew that the moment I got back to Nigeria, I’ll be too busy with Madonna, trying to make things right with her because of my unborn child, to remember a kiss I shared in a foreign country.
“Thank you Sola. I’ll never take your friendship for granted. Thank you for being so disciplined and understanding” I told her and walked out of her room.
