I shook my head in disbelief. Certainly, I felt my eyes were playing tricks on me. But I was wrong, that was really my closest friend โ Kelvin who promised to let the damsel be. He was the same person engaging in a chat with her, probably trying to make her his friend.
I was infuriated, I boiled in anger as I watched her smile to every word he said. Remembering how smooth Kelvin was with words was like placing a spear to my heart.
I walked closely past them, ensuring Kelvin didn’t catch even a glimpse of me. Just as I passed was when this lady burst into a cozy laughter.
“You’re so funnyโฆ” she said, trying to catch her breath.
Dฤmn! It was then my anger reached its peak, I was extremely vexed at Kelvin, so much that I didn’t even notice how euphonious her voice was.
I hastily crossed to the other side of the road, I stopped a cab and hurriedly dived into it.
I wanted to get back home before Kelvin, we shared the same apartment not too far away from the university.
That was our last lecture for the day, I was stressed out. What I needed was a blissful relaxing evening, not this feeling of rage that had filled me.
As I sat in the cab, my thoughts raced through time. Why was I so mad at my friend because of a lady? A lady I had just seen. It had never happened beforeโฆI mean this girl was different. I could feel it, the way my body reacted, I could feel hormones rush through my system just at her sight.
Perhaps there was something about her I was yet to know, perhaps it was something predestined.
I alighted from the cab, tired, agitated and very famished.
I dashed into the kitchen and just then I remembered that there was no food at home.
“F*ck!” I cursed.
“Can this day get any worse?” I soliloquized.
My soul was too heavy to prepare a meal, lest I add excess spices due to absent mindedness. My mind was fixed on the lady I earlier saw, what could I do to forget about her.
Just then, the door pushed open.
It was Kelvin of course, smiling like a little kid who had just stolen some chocolate.
“How far guy, you done cook?” He asked.
I gave him a baneful look and he appeared shocked by my reaction.
He ignored me, and rushed into the kitchen. I could hear the clattering of the pots as he hastily opened them one by one.
To his disappointment he must have seen them empty, and dirty, just the way we left them before going for classes.
He met me in the sitting room, and his look screamed disappointment.
“Guy, why haven’t you started cooking na. I can hear the sound of my belly rumbling.”
I ignored him and picked up my phone. My gaze was fixed on it and I acted like he wasn’t even there.
“Guy, no be you I dey follow talk?”
No response.
“Guy!” He called.
Still, I carried on with the silent treatment.
“Bro, what is it na. Why this behavior? I’ve not offended you in any wayโฆ”
“Says the guy who rats on his own friend,” I couldn’t keep my mouth shut anymore. The words just poured out.
“Rat on you? When did I do such a thing?”
“Keep up the hypocrisy, it’ll get you far in politics,” I sarcastically replied.
“Honestly, I have no ideaโฆabsolutely no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Bro you promised you would have nothing to do with that girl, but what did you doโฆyou went behind me and put your rizzing skills to work.”
“Ohhโฆso that’s what all this is about.”
I rolled my eyes at him.
“Guy, you can’t really expect me to just leave that girl now. I thought you knew I was only joking,” Kelvin said.
“That’s too expensive a joke,” I blurted.
“Look, I’ve never seen anyone as beautiful as she is. And when I conversed with her, I discovered her personality is just as beautiful as she looks.”
I shook my head. He wasn’t even remorseful about his action.
“Listen bro,” he said walking towards me.
“I need you to understand, life is survival of the fittest.”
“This has nothing to do with what you just said.”
“Don’t worry my gee, I’ll make it up to youโฆI’ll give you Folake,” he said laughing so hard.
Folake? It seemed Kelvin was hellbent on pissing me off that eveningโฆhe knew how much I disliked this girl. I always avoided her but she kept making passes on me.
“Bro, does this sound like a joke to you?”
“Ok, ok, I’m sorry,” he said, struggling to put an end to his laughter.
“But as for that girlโฆI have nothing to apologize for. May the best man win,” he said with a chuckle.
The best man? There was no need then of me trying to get her, Kelvin was obviously the best man. The best I could do was to eradicate her from my thoughts.
I stood up from the sofa and made for the door.
“Where are you going?” Kelvin asked.
“Anywhere I won’t see you,” I muttered.
“You’ll still come back, I know you too well. All you need is a repose.”
Maybe he was right, maybe what I needed was a break to forget about her. Or maybe what I needed was a good meal to ease my nerves.
I closed the door behind me and started my way out of the street.
I signaled for a cab to stop, I wanted to go to a nearby restaurant and have some good food.
A taxi halted before me.
I opened the door and you wouldn’t believe who I saw seated inside.
