PREVIOUSLY ON A DAUGHTER’S REVENGE:
…when we got to the park, she was very lucky enough to fill the last seat of the boarding bus. I watched and waved at her in tears as their bus left the park.
Indeed I shedded tears. I was very much confused on what to do next because going back to that house was like surrendering myself to the hungry lion to devour.
The worst of it all was that I had no place to run to. As I had no relatives in Lagos.
What should I do then?
I asked myself.
THE CONTINUATION:
I sat down in the park while contemplating the next step to take. The day was gradually getting dark. Passengers were trooping in their numbers boarding motors to their various destinations while the arriving buses trooped in to offload their passengers.
Even in my devastated state of mind, I was able to engage myself in a lot of observation, at least to while away time and as well to distract my mind from the torments. So with keen observation, I noticed that the motor park does not only serve the purpose of loading and unloading passengers. They also serve several purposes. It was more like a mini market at night with different kinds of traders all struggling to sell. Also, it was a conducive atmosphere for smökèrš to enjoy themselves as they felt very comfortable doing their thing at odd hours.
While many people were retiring to their various homes in the evening after a stressful day, others were warming up to come out for their own daily struggle which in my observation, could take some up till midnight.
What could make a human being deny him/herself the comfort of his/her home to sell at night? Who are these people selling to? I asked myself all these questions. Another of my observations that night which may also interest you to know, was that every goods has its market. Not only that they sell some goods which are mainly fake, that motor park at night was also a hideout for all kinds of hardenéd crimînàls.
Halfway, I sighted some dreaded touts hàrrássîng a lady. Then I had a reflection of my friend who was râpë in a motor park mercilessly by tòûts some years ago. Just then, the stories of how most rápé cases were carried out in the motor parks started televising in my hhead. Fear gripped me. I started shivering.
In a twinkling of an eye, darkness has taken charge of the earth. Loneliness has taken me hostage as I sat in a corner staring around, thinking deep amid frightening. Moreover, those tøûts have started hovering around me like kites.
I had to choose between the dēvîł and the deep blue sea. As I had no other place to run to, I decided to go home. At least the dèvïl you know is far better than the angels you don’t know.
As I smuggled myself out from the park, I was praying in my mind for God to protect and guide me through. I also called upon my late mother to also see me through.
Thank goodness that I had some money with me. The money my aunt gave me for transportation back home and ‘pocket money’. It was from the money I transported myself back home.
It was when I got home I realized that time has gone. To my utmost surprise, I didn’t find anybody outside of our street except the Aboki man that had a kiosk in front of our house. I greeted him. You need to see how surprised and happy he was to see me.
‘Ah! yar uwa na(my sister), what happened? Ina kin je(where did you go)? Oga have been looking for you everywhere’, he said.
‘Bello, Kada ka damu(don’t worry), ina na lafiya(I am fine). What’s time?’, I asked.
‘Thank God you are fine,’ he checked the time via his phone. ‘The time is 12am..’
It was Bello that even helped me to do the knocking on the gate. We spent about 30 minutes at the gate before Oga Ojo came and opened the gate for me. He didn’t even say a word to me.
It was when we got inside he called me into the sitting room for a talk.
‘Martha, where have you been?’, he asked.
‘I have been in the park’, I muttered.
‘Doing what?’, he asked.
Silent.
‘Martha I am asking you,’ he said in anger.
‘Nothing’, I reluctantly replied.
‘Nothing? Meaning what?’, he yelled.
‘Nothing’, I replied again.
‘Martha, what if something bad had happened to you. What do you expect us to tell your people?’, he paused. ‘You are running away from me, right?’.
I did not say a word. I just bowed my head while listening to him.
‘Do you know how unsafe that park is, especially to a teenager like you at that ungodly hour? What if you have entered into the net of those tóûts in that park? What if they end up taking turns in ræpîng you, eh?’.
I kept silent. I didn’t even look at him not to talk of replying to him again.
‘Martha, you have to be very careful not to present all these mouthwatering endowments of yours to those tôûts on the street to dèvôur on a platter of gold whereas you have a person like me who would appreciate you in hundred folds only if you would allow me to have a test of you..’
After all said and done, he finally added: ‘Go and eat. Then take a shower and go to bed. Sleep well. Feel free. I am not the dèvíł you think. So stop being afraid of me..’, he concluded and entered his room.
I took a deep breath. Though I wasn’t that comfortable. Because we still have a long night to go. But I had a little relief. I went to my room and locked the door. Then I shifted my bed from its formal position to my door side to form a blockage in case of an intruder.
