I was a teenage girl full of naivety. But my rapid growth gave people, especially the male forks, a false impression that I was ripe to devour.
Men lust after me. All of them wanted to sleep with me despite my immaturity.
On a fateful afternoon, I had my tray of cooked groundnuts balanced on my head, hunting for customers under the scorching sun.
‘Buy your groundnut’.
‘Sweet groundnut’.
‘Buy your groundnut’.
‘Sweet groundnut..’.
I was shouting while sweating profusely on the road.
FLASHBACK:
(on what happened earlier that day)
Fainting light illuminated the kitchen. It was a hut mounted at the back of the house. I was in the kitchen making dinner.
Meanwhile I just returned home very tired and weak. Because I have been in the farm working since morning only to come home that hot afternoon to meet a bag of groundnuts waiting for me.
As I was busy blowing light onto the firewood, my Aunty came approaching me: ‘You are to cook that groundnut in the bag. Make sure you finish selling them before night. It’s three paint-rubbers. Make sure my money is complete. And you have to be fast about it so that you will come home on time to make supper’, she thundered.
‘Ah, Aunty, I am weak. I overworked myself on the farm today. Please, I need a rest today…’
Before I could finish the statement, she landed a dirty slap on me, shutting my mouth up.
‘So you have grown so much wings to say otherwise in this house, eh? You are now so big to be talking back at me?,’ she paused and took a stare at me from head to toe. ‘Look at her, Id|ot! If you don’t finish selling that groundnut, don’t bother returning to this house today. Secondly, don’t keep us hungry tonight’, she warned while making her way inside the house. ‘Be fast with that food you are cooking, everybody is hungry in this house’, she added.
When I was done cooking the food, I called my Aunty to come and do the sharing of the food. That was the ritual in the house — I do the cooking while they do the sharing.
I immediately emptied the groundnut in a big basin, did the washing and transferred the groundnut in a big pot for cooking. Minutes later, the groundnut was done. So I sieved the water out and allowed the groundnut to cool. After that, I arranged some in a tray and poured the rest in a ‘bagco’ bag.
I headed off to the market while carrying the tray on my head and the bag in my hand.
THE LIGHT FADED AWAY.
BACK TO REALITY:
‘Buy your groundnut’.
‘Sweet groundnut..’.
I was shouting amid sweat.
And as God may have it, people were buying. And my customers were patronizing me as usual.
I have finished selling one paint-rubber already. I haven’t even gotten to the market. I did all the sales in the street.
So on my way to the market, a car slowed down and winded down its window. The occupant was an elderly man. And with the way he dressed in his ‘Baba-Riga’ attire, you need no seer to tell you he was very rich.
“Good afternoon, sir’, ” I greeted him.
‘Gooood afternooon’, he answered in admiration. ‘What is a beautiful girl like you selling under this hot sun? ‘, he added.
‘Groundnut, sir’, I replied.
‘Haba! You are too beautiful to be selling groundnuts’, he said.
‘Sir, do you want to buy groundnuts? If yes, how much groundnut do you want?’, I asked.
‘I want to buy everything you are carrying including you’, he said while smiling in lust.
‘Sir, I am not for sale’, I said.
‘Habaaa, stop it. Every woman has a price. Just name your price and I will pay,’ he said while opening his pigeon-hole. He brought out bundles of money, mint. ‘Young lady, I have money. Just name your price and I will pay you twice the money or even more. I like what you are carrying both in the front and in the back..’
I released a long hiss and started moving, alerting people to buy groundnut. ‘Thank you. I am not interested,’ I said to him.
He kept trailing me with his car. ‘I just want to brush you up. You have all it takes to succeed in life. Allow me to help you. The only price you have to pay is to allow me to harvest from this your mouth watering farmlands’.
‘Like I said earlier, I am not interested, sir. Thank you..’
‘Groundnut’
‘Groundnut’.
The name echoed from the closeby shop. I guess it was someone who wanted to buy groundnuts. I was very happy for the call, at least the person has saved me from this so-called hungry beast that has been trailing me.
I had to divert my movement to answer the caller.
‘Not even a goodbye’, his voice echoed.
‘Go home, you will get it from your wife,’ I replied.
I finished selling the groundnuts on time. The money was complete. So I joyfully went home to prepare supper.

As a result of this, the betrothal of female children was used as a strategy for family survival.
In fact, God took his time to create me specially. I am an epitome of beauty. I am tall. I am chubby. I am chocolate in complexion. I am very busty. I have a very curvy big booty. My endowments were all proportional with my body. I looked so matured. As such, my uncle never lacked suitors for me. It was more like a bidding war. He wanted to give me out to the highest bidder. And the highest bidder happened to be Alhaji Musa. A prominent politician. Alhaji Musa wanted to make me his fourth wife. But as God may have it, my Aunty refused. In fact, it was God that used her to save me from early marriage bondage and prison as most practiced here in the north.
However, I escaped from the frying pan and ended up in the fire because I was milked. I was drained to zero level. I was bruta||y sentenced into hardship and suffering by my aunt.
