…I bought a form from one of the famous higher institutions here in Lagos. However, I successfully applied for admission to study Business Administration. I went for a weekend session.

Finally, the admission lists came out one after the other.

Luckily, I found my name in one of the lists.

I was very much happy. Even Aunty Ifeoma, Oga Mba and his family, all celebrated with me.

The journey started.

Martha was doing very much well for herself in her endeavors. Although combining work with education was not an easy thing for her at all. But she managed to serve the two masters at the same time and was doing that so efficiently.

Mba and his wife have been very supportive to Martha on her educational journey. He footed all her school clearance bills.

Aunty Ifeoma paid her school fee.

Martha would work from Monday to Thursday. Then school from Friday to Saturday. And her boss, Mba, was very pleased with that despite the fact that her absence was affecting his business negatively. Nevertheless, he never shortened her salary; he was still paying her full salary every month.

Martha had a spacious room near the school environment. Mr Patrick and his family gave her a room in their house.

Mr Patrick happened to be Aunty Ifeoma’s relative.

Apart from Martha being a goddess of beauty, she had this distinct treat that made people like her so easily as if it was magic. And that treat was her charming character. No one that came in contact with her wouldn’t like her personality. She was very respectful, brilliant, hardworking and to crown it all, jovial.

COMPUTER VILLAGE, IKEJA, LAGOS, NIGERIA.

Heavy downpour has held the day hostage. As it has been raining since morning. The rain was so violent that many people didn’t come to shop that fateful Monday.

Martha managed to find her way to the shop.

Oga Mba had earlier called to inform Martha that he wouldn’t be coming to shop that day as there was no road. Heavy flooding has crippled movement for that day.

Martha was with a friend, Kelechi. The two seemed to be whiling away time since rain didn’t permit business for the day.

‘KC I dey like say I no dey o!’, she replied.

‘Because I hardly see you on weekends these days, I hope all is well?’, he made his observation clear.

‘So you are just noticing it now?’, she asked in disappointment.

‘My sweetheart, I am just noticing it. What’s the problem?’.

‘KC, you see why you cannot be a sweetheart’, Martha added.

‘What do you mean?’, KC had to ask.

‘Because you are not caring. If you are, you should have noticed my absence during the weekends a long time ago.’

‘My dear, it’s not like that’, he defended.

‘It’s not like that..then how?,’Martha asked in a mimic way.

‘Be calming down. You are always faster in finding a way to push me away from your heart. But I am going nowhere oh! I have come to stay in your heart. You are my sweetheart forever’, he paused. ‘But joke apart, I hope all is well?’.

‘All is well’, she sighed. ‘Just that I have gotten admission in a higher institution. So I go to school on Fridays and Saturdays.’

‘Oh! Wow! And you didn’t let me be part of the celebration’, KC said while frowning at her.

‘How could I when you were running away from me,’ she added.

‘My dear, it’s not my fault na. Because only a tree will hear that it will be cut down and still stand. Thank God you have now known the reason I was doing so,’ KC said.

‘Yea’, she nodded in affirmation. ‘But I thought I informed you when I applied for the admission’, Martha said.

‘Yes, you did’, he began to nod his head in affirmation. ‘ You Informed me. And I congratulated you in advance in a very grandstyle that day. I remember vividly that the celebration was a blast that very day..’ KC was recalling.

‘KC shut up jor’, she jokingly interrupted. ‘Just look at the way you are hyping it as if anything serious happened that day. If somebody overheard you now, the person would be thinking you threw a party for me that day without knowing that you only congratulated me in advance with just a bottle of soft drink. Nothing else, oh!,’Martha set the record straight amid laughter.

‘At least I did something. We celebrated something. I congratulated you in advance in my own little way for it was a bold step that you took,’ he paused. ‘You know I would have done more if I was still part and parcel of your life when you secured the admission,’ KC bragged.

‘Look at this one’, Martha was pointing a finger at him in laughter. ‘As if you would’ve done anything tangible,’ she added.

‘Why not, I would have contributed in my own little way. Because It’s my sweetheart we are talking about here,’ KC insisted.

‘Abeg, go jor! Stingy man like you’, Martha added.

‘Like I said earlier, I will definitely contribute in my own little way. But one thing is for sure, I no fit do pass myself’, KC said very boldly.

‘I don hear, Mr Doings’, Martha had to accept.

‘But wait o, for how long now?’, KC asked amid surprise.

‘I have been going to school for the past five months now’, Martha replied.

‘Ah! That’s ages oh. And I did not take notice on time’, he exclaimed.

‘You see your life. Sweetheart my foot..’

They continued with their discussion. Laughing away their sorrows while the rain pelted the zinc angrily.

KC was a beloved friend in whom Martha was well pleased. The only man that was very close to her heart.
