    🔸The Mad Man:

A few days after Nzube became close to the mad man, the reality of what was going on became clear to him. He became worried after the true meaning of what the mad man was saying downed on him.

“So if Lucy is the mad man’s daughter and if Ndidi is Lucy’s mother, that means I have been making love to mother and daughter?” Nzube asked himself. He discovered that he has been entangled in an ugly web of terrible relationship. He has refused to go back home and instead stayed in the house where he kept the mad man. Nzube was trying desperately to figure out the whole truth before confronting the situation. He does not want to make any mistake.

“This also means that Ndidi lied to me about her past. She told me that she has never being married. And this also means she lied about Lucy. She told me that Lucy is a random girl she picked from the village, but she is actually her biological daughter. What a mess! So, I have been making love with a mother and her daughter all these while?” Nzube asked himself again. He was seated in the living room, sipping his wine and thinking about how to rescue himself from the terrible mess. Suddenly, the mad man entered the room.

“You didn’t go to work today?” The mad man asked. He took a seat close to Nzube. He took a cup and poured himself some wine.

“My brother, I’m resting. Also, there are some things I need to get off my chest. I’m really worried.” Nzube said.

“What is getting you worried my friend? Is it a business deal?” The mad man asked.

“It’s a relationship matter. I wanted to ask you. Do you have a proof that Ndidi is your wife?” Nzube asked. He has been thinking of how to tell the mad man that he is actually in a relationship with Ndidi.

“Just give me a moment.” The mad man said as he entered into another room and fetched a marriage certificate. He handed it over to Nzube who was surprised that he was able to keep such a document safe for many years. He also gave him an old photograph showing Ndidi when she was pregnant.

“These are the only things I took with me that night as I left my house after the armed robbery attack. Shocking that I remembered to take it after I lost my mind. Love is a beautiful thing isn’t it?” The mad man asked with emotions in his voice.

“Yes it is! Love is a great thing! Wow! This is impressive! And this must be very emotional for you.” Nzube said as he took a look at the marriage certificate and the old photograph.

“So if I tell you I’m in love with your wife, would that make you angry?” Nzube asked. He wanted to see the reaction of the mad man so he watched him closely. He made sure he did not tell him about Lucy yet, as the result could be disastrous.

“I know you are in love with my wife. And I know you have been making love to her too.” The mad man said. His face looked sad after he made the statement.

“But I know it is not your fault. I’m not angry. I forgive you for whatever is going on between the two of you. You did not know she was married. But I beg you, please, leave her for me now that I’m back to my senses. I want to reunite with my wife and daughter. Please, I know you are rich and I may not be able to fight you if I want to. But, I want to be with my family again even if this will be my last achievement on earth. Please, I beg you, take me to them.” The mad man pleaded. He was kneeling down.

“I have already promised you that I will help you get your family back. I will keep that promise. Just give me some time to fix things. It’s not that easy but I will do it for you. I wanted to marry Ndidi, but now that you are here with all these evidence, I will hands off.” Nzube said. He stood up and left the living room.

Nzube jumped into his car and headed to the house where Ndidi and Lucy have all waited for him to return all to no avail. When he entered the compound, he met Lucy watching television in the living room. Ndidi was not at home.

“My love, welcome. I have missed you so much. Why did you abandon me for so long? Where have you been?” Lucy asked as soon as Nzube walked into the living room.

“Lucy, I’m afraid we can’t keep doing this. I mean, our relationship has to end. I have to stop making love to you.” Nzube said with a serious face. He did not allow Lucy to kiss him as she brought forward her lips.

“Why are you saying that? Have I done something wrong? Why do you want to dump me? You are dumping me because of my madam?” Lucy asked sarcastically. She went back to the sofa where she was sitting and wedged her chin with her left hand. Nzube came to meet her. He wanted to tell her that he has confirmed that the mad man is indeed her father. He wanted to tell her it will be improper to be in a relationship with her and her mother at the same time. He wanted to tell Lucy the who truth.

“I have something very important to tell you and I want you to pay close attention.” Nzube said. It was difficult for him to speak, but he has decided to end things with Lucy and her mother and allow them reunite with the mad man.

“No! You will be the one to list to me. And I want you to pay close attention because I also have something important to tell you.” Lucy said with force in her voice. She sounded very serious.

“You abandoned me here for many days, without a phone call, you were not taking your calls and replying your text messages. But guess what? I was sick and I went to the hospital for a test. Here is the test result.” Lucy said as she hands over a white envelope to Nzube.

    “What is this?” Nzube asked.

“Open it.” Lucy said. Nzube quickly opened the envelope and saw that Lucy is one month pregnant.

“You are pregnant?” Nzube asked. His voice was trembling and his hands were shaking as he clutched the pregnancy test result.

“Yes I’m! And you are responsible for it. You can’t get me pregnant and then tell me you want to end things with me. Don’t make me think you are coward.” Lucy said as she walked out of the room. Nzube knows that things just got more complicated than he expected.

    🔸The Mad Man:

Nzube drove the mad man to a salon where he was given a clean haircut. His face changed instantly. He took him to one of his houses in the city and kept him there. The mad man took his bath, cleaned up properly and ate a delicious meal bought from the restaurant. He was given new clothes. He looked very handsome and entirely different.

“I want to apologize for the way I spoke to you in the morning. It is not in my character to disrespect people in your kind of situation. I’m really sorry. And I want to say I’m ready to listen to you now.” Nzube said. He was sitting at the balcony of the one storey building when the mad man came to meet him after eating and cleaning up. There is a bottle of wine on the table before him.

“Please sit down.” Nzube tells the mad man. He was speaking to him with a measured tone, trying to know if his mood would change like that of someone whose senses are not complete, but the man remained stable and watched Nzube with close attention.

“I’m happy you want to listen to me. No one has ever given me the opportunity to explain myself. Also, thank you for taking care of me. I have not felt this good for the past 20 years. Today feels special. I feel so happy that someone cares for me.” The mad man said. He sat on the extra seat on the balcony, directly facing Nzube. He is not behaving as if he is mad and this made Nzube uncomfortable. The man’s reasoning seemed completely crystal clear.

“Pardon me for asking. But are you really mad? You sound very reasonable for someone who looked so dirty a while ago. Pardon me please, don’t be offended. I’m just curious. Would you want to talk about your life with me?” Nzube asked. He poured a cup of wine for the mad man who sipped it with so much dignity.

“I’m not offended.” The mad man said. He lowered the cup of wine from his mouth, placed it on the small table. The air was cool and the compound was calm. Nzube bought this house a year ago because of how it overlooks the streets. When he sits on the balcony, he takes a look at many parts of the street and it makes him feel good. The mad man too seemed to like it when he looked down and saw people going about their business in the streets nearby. Then he started talking.

“I was once mad. But I’m no longer mad. I stopped being mad when I saw my daughter and my wife walking into your house a few weeks ago.” The mad man said.

“Can you recall why you ran mad?” Nzube asked.

“My wife is the reason I ran mad.” The mad man said. He sipped his wine copiously as he talked and there was no atom of madness in his voice.

“How do you mean? Did she use charms? Is that what you mean?” Nzube asked. He has become more and more curious as the mad man continued to open up about his life.

“She did not use charms. As a matter of fact, she is a very good woman and my love for her was immeasurable.” The mad man paused and sipped some more wine. He looked away into the vacant space and returned his gaze at Nzube. Then he continued talking.

“Twenty years ago I used to live in Aba with my wife. We lived in a one room apartment but we were so happy. We loved each other so much and managed what we could afford. One day, when my wife was pregnant and close to delivery, armed robbers attacked our house. They f0rced themselves on my wife and made me watch it. They did not care that she was heavily pregnant, in fact, already nine months pregnant. There were eight men who took turns to do it one after the other until she fainted and became unconscious but they did not stop. They tied me with a rope and held a gun to my head.” The mad man was crying and tears poured from his eyes as he recounted the ugly experience. Nzube was so shocked that he dropped the glass cup in his hand and listened more attentively.

“When they left, I was no longer in my normal senses. At some points when I was watching what they did to my lovely wife, I stopped being a normal person. The trauma and sorrow in my heart turned my brain upside down and since then, I have never being my normal self. All I could remember was me leaving my house and running into the street and that was it.” The mad man said. He bent down as tears continued to pour from his eyes like tap water. Nzube gave him a white handkerchief to clean his eyes.

“And you never saw your wife again? After you left that room? And why did you leave? You could have taken her to the hospital. I’m not judging you but anyone in his normal senses would do that for his wife.” Nzube said.

“I just said I was not in my normal senses. When I saw what she went through and knowing that I could not help her broke me down. I lost it all. If I didn’t run mad, I would probably have done worse. It was too much for a man to take. I felt helpless. I lost my mind. But that madness was gone the moment I saw my wife entering your house with my daughter. Knowing that she made it out alive and even gave birth to the baby effectively cured my madness. I thought she and the baby died because that night was so bad. And that is why I’m fighting to stay with my daughter and also my wife once again. I was not able to help her that night. I was not there for the two of them. But now, I will give anything for them. I will give my all to get them back.” The mad man said. He was still crying. Even Nzube fought back tears as the moment became very emotional for him.

“Don’t worry, I assure you that you will get your daughter and wife back. I will help you get them back.” Nzube promised. From that day on, they became friends and really close. But deep down in his heart, Nzube wondered how he will handle the situation.

    🔸The Mad Man:

“I’m no longer confortable here. If you want to continue our relationship, you have to relocate me from this house. How can I be your girlfriend and still be your house help? It doesn’t add up. Move me to another house or kiss our relationship a goodbye.” Lucy tells Nzube. As usual, he has crept into Lucy’s room in the night wanting to do as usual.

“Is that all you want?” Nzube asked. He spoke with the air of a rich man who thinks getting an apartment won’t be a problem.

“Yes! That’s all my love. I need to have some respect. I’m tired of cleaning and cooking.” Lucy said. It was a few days to her 20th birth and she smartly thinks a new apartment from Nzube would be a perfect birthday gift. The time was a few minutes past 10 pm and she was sitting at one end of her bed, far away from Nzube who she did not allow to touch her.

“If it is an apartment that you want, consider it done. In fact, even if you want a house, I will provide it. I really love you Lucy. This has gone beyond a boss sleeping with his housemaid. I have fallen in love with you.” Nzube said. He was already on fire and a man trying to get a woman will promise heaven and earth. But Nzube was capable of providing all he was promising. He was not playing.

“I will take you to your new house on your birthday. It’s a promise. I have many houses in the city. You will have an entire house to yourself.” Nzube promised.

“Oh! My God! Are you serious? You are joking right?” Lucy said while jumping and slamming herself on the bed. She quickly rushed to hug Nzube and they started smooching until they made love to each other.

Meanwhile, Nzube has gradually lost interest in Ndidi. He no longer loves her and he has hardly made love to her for the past two months since he started making out with Lucy. Lucy has ultimately replaced Ndidi in Nzube’s heart. But he does not know how to tell her yet. It is a big problem to him since he felt it is a bad thing for him to dump Ndidi just like that after engaging her.

Ndidi herself has started suspecting that all was not well. She decided to confront Nzube so as to know the direction of the relationship.

“What is happening? You no longer sleep with me. You no longer touch me. You no longer stay around me as you used to. Have I done something wrong?” Ndidi asked Nzube as he was preparing to go to work that morning. He was busy knotting his tie absentmindedly as Ndidi spoke to him with a lot of concerns on her face. Nzube’s bag was already on the dining table where Ndidi had served him breakfast. He said he was not going to eat.

“Nothing is happening. I mean, I still love you. Why are asking? Are you suspecting me?” Nzube asked.

“No! Hell no! But, you are suddenly very cold towards me. I no longer feel you like before. I feel like you are no longer connected to me like before. Is there a problem?” Ndidi asked. She was sitting on the edge of the dining table. She loves Nzube so much so that she could die if he dumps her.

“There is no problem and I still love you.” Nzube said as he kissed Ndidi and left for work. She was not satisfied, so she commenced her investigation to unravel what was going on in her relationship. As Nzube left, she bit her lips hard and become more determined to uncover whatever would stop her from marrying him.

When Nzube stepped into the compound from the main house, he met the mad man.

    “Who are you?” Nzube asked.

“It doesn’t matter!” The mad man said. He had his dirty bag under his arm and he looked away from Nzube, staring into vacant space like a native doctor searching for answers to a puzzle.

“How did you get into my compound, and what are you looking for?” Nzube asked again, this time more serious.

“I’m looking for my daughter. I saw her enter this compound a few weeks back. Are you the oga of this house?” The mad man asked. He turned to Nzube, interrogating him like a police man.

“Yes, this is my house.” Nzube said. He was now curious, wanting to know why the mad man looked dirty but still spoke with clarity.

“Why have they not told you that I came here to look for my daughter? The mad man asked. He talked like a father questioning his little child and Nzube was startled.

“No! Your daughter is not in this house.” Nzube said, dismissing the mad man with a wave of the hand. He called the gateman to chase away the mad man.

As he arrived his office that morning, he kept pondering on the things the mad man said. He wondered who would be the man’s daughter.

“Is it Ndidi or Lucy? I will have to find out. I must investigate properly and find out who is his daughter. A mad man cannot just come into my house and start looking for his daughter. He sounded very clear and he knows what he was saying.” Nzube said to himself.

His heart was troubled and he could not stay in the office so he entered his car started driving back home. When he navigated into the streets, he saw the mad man and he quickly stopped by. He pleaded with the mad man until he agreed to enter his car and they drove off.

    🔸The Mad Man:

“When we get there, I don’t want my fiancée to know that you are my daughter. He is not aware that I have a child already. Please, you must keep your mouth shut. I’m going to tell him that you are the house girl I brought to live with us.” Ndidi tells her daughter Lucy. Lucy just turned 19, looking so beautiful and presentable. She started to imagine herself as a house girl and she found it hard to believe that she would be able to play that role.

“Mum! How can you turn me into a house girl? Are you really serious? You want me to be a house girl in your own house? To be your house girl? In the house of your husband to be? I can’t take this mum!” Lucy shouted at her mother.

She was very angry over the suggestion. At that time, they were already at the gate of Nzube’s house. Nzube is a very rich business man who wanted to remarry because of the death of his wife. He had no child of his own and he was forty five years old. He had already given up on love but decided to try again years after his wife died.

Nzube met Ndidi a year ago and their relationship blossomed to the extent that Nzube can no long sleep without her by his side. She moved in with him three months ago. They became more or less like a married couple. The only thing remaining was just exchange of vows and payment of bride price. Ndidi was just like his wife.

Lucy, Ndidi’s daughter just returned from the university because of ASUU strike, so she has located her mother because she needed a place to stay until the strike was over. She traced her mother when she found out she had moved from their previous apartment.

“It is just for a while. He will soon marry me. He has already proposed to me. When he marries me, I will then tell him that you are my daughter. By the way, he has no child of his own, so he will be too happy to accept you as his child. Please, just do this for me. Just pretend to be the house girl. It is just for a few weeks before he marries me, then everything will return to how it is supposed to be. You will have everything you want. The house girl is just a cover up.” Ndidi said. She had that irresistible motherly plea in her eyes, and Lucy found it hard to say no to her.

“Ok Mum. What you are asking me to do is very demeaning. Imagine me turning myself into a house girl in a house where I’m supposed to be enjoying. Me? A 200-level student? But it’s fine, I will do it.” Lucy said as the entered Nzube’s compound. The house is a palatial mansion and Lucy was swept off her feet when she saw the massive three storey building..

“Wow! You mean this is his house. I mean your fiancée’s house? Mum, you are very lucky. Wow!” Lucy said. She stopped briefly and took a look at the build before the stepped into it. She has never seen such a big house not to talk of sleeping inside.

“Yes my dear. God finally remembered me and blessed me with the love of my life after many years of suffering. This is your house now my daughter. Remember not to call me mum. In this house, I’m your madam. If you call me mum, you will ruin everything I have built the past one year.” Ndidi said with a serious warning in her eyes.

They immediately went into the building and settled down. Nzube was yet to return from work. Lucy was told to feel at home. She was taken to the guest room where she kept her things. Although, it is tastefully furnished, Lucy still felt isolated and she felt insulted by the title ‘house girl’ but she decided to let the sleeping dogs lie.

Meanwhile, a mad man had secretly followed them from the moment they dropped off from the taxi. The mad man camped outside the gate. He had knocked severally and the gateman refused to let him in.

“What are you looking for in this compound?” The gateman asked the mad man after opening the gate.

“My daughter entered this house right now. I saw her with my ‘koro koro’ eyes.” The mad man said. He was laughing as he spoke with the gateman.

“Are you mad? Are you out of your mind? Your daughter is not here. Who told you that you have a daughter? I think the demons in your head are at work. I’m closing my eyes right now. I want you to vamoose before I open them.” The gateman said.

“Okay. I will go but I will be back for my daughter.” The mad man said as he left the place.

“Go and never return!” The gateman warned the mad man who by then had gone very far.

But the next day, the mad man returned just as he had promised. He was talking with the gateman when Ndidi saw him from the balcony where she was sitting and drinking wine and her heart dropped into her belly.

“My eyes must be deceiving me. Is that not Ude?” She asked herself as she immediately came downstairs and went straight to the gate.

“Listen to me.” She said to gateman who had managed to pursue the mad man again.

“You must never allow that man into this building. Any day I find him even at the gate, or close to it, I will make sure you lose your job. Have I made myself clear?” She yelled at the gateman.

“Yes madam. But it is not my fault o! He is the one who keeps coming to ask of his daughter. Madam, is his daughter in this house?” The gateman asked.

“Shut up your dirty mouth and do your job. I will tell my fiancé to sack you if I ever see that man near this gate again.” Ndidi said. She was shouting very loudly. The gateman became very scared, and more determined to deal with the mad man if he ever sees him again.

As he walked back inside the house, Ndidi remembered her past. She and the mad man were married for one year before he ran mad. They lived a very happy life and she loved him so much. They were very young then.

They were living in Aba by then by that time. That was 19 years ago when she was pregnant for Lucy. Ude suddenly ran mad and disappeared from the house one evening and he has never seen him again since then. After waiting endlessly for him to return, Ndidi gave up and decided to move on with her life.

“My past has come back to haunt me. I thought you were lost Ude my love, but here you are. You are still alive. You even still recognize me and remembered that he has a daughter. How did he find this place? How did he know that I now live in Port Harcourt? Indeed, blood is thicker than water. I think he knows that he has a child. He wants to come and ruin my present happiness. I will not allow this.” Ndidi said.

She is already deeply in love with Nzube. She is currently forty years old but she still hopes she can marry again and bear a child for Nzube before hitting menopause.

“I have a battle to fight. I have to make the mad man disappear so that I will achieve my aim of getting married to Nzube. He is very rich and I love him. I can’t lose him. He is the only thing I have right now and the mad man cannot ruin our love. I suffered so much when Ude ran mad. I must marry Nzube and the mad man cannot ruin my plans. The battle line is drawn.” Nididi said as she took another sip of her wine.
