“That’s enough!” Miss Salome warns her class. “Jake move to the back, Aime and Julia, you both remain partners” Miss Salome ordered.

Julia pouted as Jake left her seat but she was excited to have Aime as her seatmate. When Aime sat beside her, they both did a secret handshake under their desk.

After a few hours, the lecture was over.

“Julia” Someone called when Julia was about to step out. She turned back to see Amanda walking towards her with a smirk and she rolled her eyes.

“Why are you still bothering me. You won and we don’t owe each other anything anymore” Julia sighed.

“I know I just wanted to see your face and let you know I still don’t like you but I won’t bother you and Jake anymore” She said before walking away.

Julia rolled her eyes.

“Once a bitch always a bitch” Aime mumbled as she came with Jake.

“Rico is inviting us to his place for a house party,” Aime added.

Jake shrugged. They were already cool so he didn’t have problems attending to his parents. They went outside and a familiar car was waiting for Jake at the parking lot.

“How many times will I tell you to stop coming to my school?” Jake sighed tiredly.

“Please, let me just drop you off” His father, Henry, begged.

“I’m going with my girlfriend” Jake replied but Julia was quick enough to jump out.

“Actually I’m leaving with Aime and I will be with my mom later today. Jake has nothing to do so I believe he would love to bond with you” She said.

“I have somewhere to be in the evening” Jake found another excuse.

“Jake, just go with your dad. You can’t ignore him forever” Aime sighed.

“I support Aime and we’ll see you at Rico’s this evening and I’m also taking your car” Julia blew him a kiss and left with Aime.

Jake signed and entered his dad’s car. Seems like he had no choice anyway. Maybe getting to know his father again won’t be such a bad thing.

RICO’S PARTY••

It’s evening, few students were available vibing to the music and whatever was going on.

“So you’re saying Jay has been expelled?” Kelvin asked Rico. They were all sitting on the floor and chatting.

“Apparently he deals with drugs,” Rico shrugged.

“Well, I don’t miss him” Sydney said and they all laughed. Kelvin looked at Rico and Sydney then smirked.

“Remember when you were fighting me for my girl?” He suddenly asked, making Kaelyn tap him.

“Dead ass” Rico picked a pillow and threw it at him. “Why would you say that in front of my girl?” He frowned.

Kelvin threw the pillow back and they both began chasing themselves with pillows. Kaelyn and Sydney only shook their heads.

“How was your dad?” Julia rested her head on Jake’s shoulder as she asked.

“Not bad but it’s still kinda weird for me” Jake replied.

“Same with how my mom is,” Julia chuckled.

Jake took her knuckles and kissed it.

“I’m just glad that everything is fine and we don’t get to hide like we are doing things wrong anymore” He said and Julia nodded, agreeing with him.

“I’m happy to be able to tell you I love you openly” She said.

“Or kiss your lips not caring if anyone is watching” Jake pecked her as he said that. “And maybe not try to finger you under the tables”

“Jake” Julia’s cheeks was red as she hit him.

“I love you,” Jake said seriously.

“I love you too” Julia whispered and he gripped her throat, pulling her close to take her lips. Julia only smiled in the kiss.

A pillow suddenly hit them making them disengage.

“What do you think you’re doing with the pillow fight?” Aime shouted excitedly.

“No I’m too cool for that” Bryan crossed his arms not moving from his seat.

Jake smirked and picked a pillow to throw at him. Julia did too and Aime.

“That’s it!!” He grabbed a pillow and joined in the fight.

The living room was scattered with the feathers of the pillows. Happy noises and happy smiles. Sometimes in life you have a bad day, sometimes it’s a good day and we must all live up to it to the best we can, the world is not against you.

Aime got confused on why Julia was asking but she nodded and took Julia to the ward.

“Thank you, just wait here why I speak to her alone” Julia mumbled and Aime could only just nod.

Julia entered the ward, the woman was awake even though her head was covered in bandages.

“Are you feeling better?” Julia slowly asked as she carefully took the chair beside her.

“My head still hurts but I think I’m better,” She replied.

Julia nodded and licked her lips.

“I don’t know if now is the right time to ask you questions?” She mumbled.

“It’s fine Julia, I also need to tell you things” The woman gave a gentle smile. “First of all my name is Mariah” She said and Julia nodded.

“I know it’s hard to believe because you’ve lived with a woman all your life playing the role of your mom but -”

Julia caught Mariah off. “First of all, Romina never acted like a mother to me”

Mariah sighed. “She never changed or cared. I used to date your father when we were still in college even when I knew it was not really there, then we broke up and I discovered I was pregnant for him and my parents would kill me” Tears came out from Mariah’s eyes.

“I couldn’t tell them and Romina found out. She told me she was willing to take my place because she wanted your father so she faked her pregnancy and took the whole shame while I hid like a coward” Mariah cried as she explained to Julia.

“So you just abandoned me?” Julia asked in tears.

“I hate myself everytime and I beg Romina to let me see you but she would never allow me. I do watch you from afar and when I saw this opportunity, I let myself be disguised as Martha because she had agreed to help me. I was going to be the one who marries your father while she runs away with her new lover but I didn’t know I would get kidnapped” Mariah explained and Julia was crying so much now.

“I’m sorry I’m just coming into your life now. I know you won’t be able to forgive me, I can’t even forgive myself but I want you to know I’m deeply sorry” Mariah pleaded.

Julia shook her head and stood up. “I need time to process all these” She replied before leaving the ward. She bumped into Aime.

“I… I thought I should wait for you out-” Aime wasn’t done with talking when Julia threw herself in her arms and continued crying.

After she had calmed down, Julia told Aime everything.

“That’s too much, I don’t even know what to say” Aime gasped but rubbed on her shoulders. “You should worry about one thing first before we can think of the rest. Let’s focus on Jake getting better, that’s very important” Aime suggested.

“You’re right,” Julia nodded, then looked around in confusion. “I haven’t seen Bryan since I woke up. I remembered seeing him at the scene” She asked and Aime’s face changed.

“What’s wrong?” Julia asked with curious eyes.

“He got a call from home. It’s about his dad” Aime mumbled softly.

Rico just finished talking to some officers before going to meet Bryan and his mother in the visitors room.

“I can’t believe he did that,” Rico mumbled.

Bryan didn’t say anything, he just kept hugging his mother who won’t stop crying. Earlier he received a call from her about his dad. She said she returned from work and found that he hang himself on the ceiling fan, living a letter on the couch.

In the letter he talked about how much he hates himself for disappointing as a good husband to his wife and father to his son. He talked about regretting not going for a treatment earlier and he wished his sons would not make his mistake.

“I know he hurt me so much but he was never a bad man” Nirvana cried.

“Mom it’s okay” Bryan consoled her.

“Promise me that you won’t end up like him. Always work on getting better” Nirvana talked to Rico and Bryan.

“I promise mom, we will start trying from now and I want to be a good man for Sydney” Rico said and Bryan gave him a confused look.

“I might have forgotten to mention but we are kinda seeing each other” Rico mumbled. “You were the one who told me to give love a chance and she’s been great so far” Rico flashed a little smile.

“I’m glad you do. I’m sad dad died but it kinda made me feel a bit relieved. Like a burden has been lifted from me, I’m not a bad son am I?” Bryan asked.

“I understand,” Nirvana muttered.

“My friend is having surgery, and I need to report to the hospital to see how he’s doing,” Bryan said.

“You don’t have friends” Rico rolled his eyes.

“Jake and his friends are my friends and you should loosen up Rico” Bryan mumbled before standing up and leaving.

“Wait” Rico called before Bryan could leave completely.

“What?” Bryan turned back.

“Tell Jake I’m counting on him to survive” Rico said and Bryan only smiled as he left.

Everyone was waiting outside the theater. It’s been hours and the surgeons aren’t out yet. They all looked tense, especially Julia who kept pacing back and forth.

The theater opened and a doctor stepped out.

The doctor removed his face mask. He was smiling, meaning it was good news.

“It’s a success” He announced.

It was black then white, black then white again but mixed with some blurbs then black before Julia sight became clear. The ceiling looked unfamiliar, she tried moving but her hand felt heavy, she had dripped on.

“Julia, I’m so glad you’re awake” A familiar voice sounded. Julia blinks repeatedly to look at the blurry face before seeing that it was Aime.

“Aime, where am I ?” She asked confusedly.

“You’re in the hospital but that’s not important. I will call the nurse to help…”

“Wait, why am I here?” Julia asked confusedly.

“Like I said, that’s not important yet. I will call the nurse to help…”

Aime was talking but Julia wasn’t paying attention as she began recalling little details that happened earlier. She went to an uncompleted building to find Jake’s mom then she saw Romeo, he was pointing a gun at her.

She remembered him punching her on the face and the woman tied to the chair wasn’t Martha. Gun shot… There was a gun shot but she wasn’t shot, blood dropped on her face, those gray eyes, the whispers.

“I’m sorry” She recalled Jake whispering to her. He was laying on top of her and his eyes were drowsy then lots of gunshots were heard and Jake slumped on her body.

“Where is Jake!” She demanded.

“What?” Aime asked.

“Where is Jake?” Julia yelled again and her eyes were teary. She hoped it was a fake memory and Jake is alright.

“Julia calm down” Aime mumbled but Julia couldn’t.

“I need to see Jake, where is he…” She tried removing the drip from her hands.

“He got shot in the back but he’s not dead. He just needs to undergo an immediate surgery. He has been taken to the theater and all we can do is hope for him to be fine” Aime replied, she was in tears too.

“I want to see him,” Julia cried.

“You can’t see him now, he’s undergoing the surgery” Aime replied.

Julia stopped pulling on her drip. She closed her eyes and cried. “If anything happens to Jake then I will have myself to blame” She said painfully.

“No it’s not your fault. You didn’t cause anything, it’s all that bastard Romeo’s fault, thank God he’s dead” Aime mumbled.

“Romeo is dead?” Julia looked confused.

“He was stubborn and kept shooting, the police had to shoot him. It was a very scary scenario but you passed out the moment Jake passed out” Aime reported.

“Serves him right” Julia mumbled and remembered the woman from earlier. Romeo said that was her mother which still confused her up till now.

“There was a woman with us, how is she?” Julia asked.

“She was also rushed to the hospital, she broke her head but the doctor said she’s stable. She just needs more rest, she’s not awake yet” Aime replied and Julia nodded. She didn’t want to tell Aime anything until she’s certain.

Later, Julia was discharged from the hospital but she still needed to see Jake. His surgery starts this evening according to the doctor, he lost lots of blood and he had been giving available blood.

“Can I at least see him before surgery starts?” Julia pleaded with the doctor.

“Alright but we don’t need too much crowd there” the doctor replied.

“Don’t worry doctor, I promise I won’t take time” Julia promised.

The doctor did what Julia asked and led her to the ward Jake was in. Jake was laying on the bed, oxygen on his nose and drops on his hands.

“I’ll leave you with just a few minutes” the doctor said and Julia nodded, she couldn’t take her eyes off the shaking. This is the first time she’s seeing him look this helpless.

She moved closer to him, her eyes teary. She doesn’t remember how badly he treated her, all she knew was he saved her life. He risked his life for her and that was enough for her.

“You’re a strong guy Jake, I know you’ll make it out alive” She whispered to him.

He couldn’t talk, the monitor was beeping and his fingers were moving. He could hear her even though he couldn’t do anything.

Julia bent to plant a kiss on his forehead.

“I’ll be waiting for you” She whispered to him before leaving the ward.

“He will be fine” Aime flashed a supportive smile at Julia.

“I pray so” Julia mumbled. “I want to see the other woman, I have questions to ask her, can you take me to her ward?” Julia asked.

Julia and the woman managed got to the last door but it was locked with key.

“What are we gonna do now? I don’t want to die” Julia cried.

The woman found a hairpin from her hair and forced the door to open. The pin worked on the laptop and they both stepped out.

“If anyone step out of this lips, you both die” He said, pointing his gun at them.

“Romeo just let us go please” Julia bagged.

“Over my dead body” He replied, moving closer to them still pointing the gun.

“If you want me then why bring an innocent woman?” Julia angrily asked.

Romeo replied by laughing for a while. “Innocent woman? Are you not gonna tell her the throat or you don’t want Julia to know that you’re her mother?” He asked and Julia eyes widened.

“What are you talking about? I already have a mother” She looked confused.

“Well now is not the best time to talk about it is it?” Romeo replied, still pointing his gun at him. “Go back inside” He ordered.

The woman was the first to move in but she immediately grabbed Romeo’s hand, holding it tight.

“Run Julia!!!!!” She yelled.

Julia stood, feeling overwhelmed. She can’t live her here.

“Run, I can’t hold him for too long” She shouted.

Julia nodded and ran outside. Romeo forcefully pushed the woman from him, her head meet the wall and she passed out then Romeo went out to find Julia.

She haven’t gone far and he was able to stop her by shooting his gun in the air. Julia froze and slowly turned to face him.

“It was supposed to be simple” He said, moving closer to her while pointing his gun at her. “I would just sleep with you and no one gets hurt but you decide to be a bitch about it” He rolled his eyes.

Suddenly siren began sounding and before they knew it. Some police car stopped and officers came down, pointing their gun at Romeo.

“You called the cops. I thought I told you to come alone” He asked with widened eyes.

“Put your weapon down, your hands on your head” An officer ordered.

Romeo was still pointing his gun at Julia and Jake immediately ran towards them.

“I should have killed you” Romeo muttered and pulled the trigger.

It all happened so fast, Jake was in front of her, hugging her tight when the shot happened. They both went to the floor and couple of gun shots were heard.

“Jake” Julia’s eyes were teary.

“I’m okay” He managed to say but blood fell from his mouth. He took some strand of her hair and arranged it to the back of her hair. “I’m sorry” He mumble before his body went weak. His head fell at the side of her neck and he passed out.

“Jake!!” Julia cried out.

“I thought so too, I’m so confused here” Bryan replied.

“What’s going on? What do you mean you thought I was kidnapped?” Martha asked.

“Where have you been?” Jake ignored her question and asked his own. Hr have been looking for her since the wedding and she suddenly showed up.

Martha gave him a look mixed with guilt and Jake shook his head.

“Don’t tell me it’s what I think it is” He pleaded.

“I’m sorry Jake, I didn’t know how to tell you and I know about you and Julia. I didn’t want to spoil things for the both of you when I’m not even sure of what I want” She explained to him with teary eyes.

Jake shook his head and moved back then punched the wall three times.

“Julia is still in danger” Bryan reminded them.

“It’s all my fault” Jake mumbled. He went back to the apartment and took his phone, he called her number but couldn’t reach her.

“What happened to Julia?” Martha asked worriedly.

“You just stay out of it!” Jake pointed at her, giving her a warning look as he tried Julia’s number again but it wasn’t reachable.

“I should have listened to her. I shouldn’t have kicked her out, I shouldn’t have said the things I said” Jake can’t help but blame himself for everything that’s happening.

“Now is not the time to curse yourself. We need to find Julia” Bryan told him.

Jake nodded and made to leave with Bryan when Martha stopped them.

“Let me go with you guys. I’m also worried about Julia” She looked at them with pleading eyes.

“If you promise to me useful then you can come with us” Bryan replied and led them to his car before driving off.

“You can’t be serious!!” Aime complained angrily at the phone before hanging up and going to meet the girls sitting in the living room.

“What did they say?” Kaelyn asked.

“She’s not declared missing because it’s not up to 24 hours” Aime rolled her eyes and slumped on her chair, thinking on what next to do.

The door opened and Bryan walked in with Jake and Martha.

“What’s going on?” Aime looked confused seeing Martha walk in with them.

“Have you found Julia?” Kaelyn happily asked.

“It’s a long story. We will explain when we find Julia and make sure she’s okay” Bryan replied.

“So what’s the plan now?” Kelvin looked confused.

“Anybody have Julia’s laptop or phone?” Jake asked.

“She took her phone with her but her laptop is here and I don’t know the password” Aime brought the laptop out from her bag.

“How are we gonna access it, what’s her favourite food drink animal, stuffs like that?” Kaelyn asked.

They tried all they could for the laptop, they even used Jake name, they combined their nickname but nothing worked.

“Guys” Martha slowly called and they all looked at her.

“The person I’m seeing is a professional hacker. I can all him over and ask him to help us” She mumbled, looking unsure.

“You’re seeing someone new?” There’s surprise in Aime’s face.

“We’ll ask this question after Julia has been found, do call him” Jake replied.

Martha nodded. She put her phone in her ears and began calling the person she was seeing.

“Ten!!” He yelled and pointed the gun at the woman on the chair, ready to pull the trigger.

“Don’t do it, I will get on the bed” Julia stopped in.

“Then get on it and don’t waste my time” He replied.

With shaky legs, Julia slowly walked to the bed.

“Take your panties off” He ordered but Julia couldn’t bring herself to do it.

“Never mind I will just rip it off myself” Romeo dipped his gun in his pocket and walked to the bed.

He knelt on the bed and held Julia’s leg to spread them apart but she kicked him.

“Bitch” He slapped her and punched her face before forcefully ripping her shirt off.

She was putting on lace bra. He smiled slowly and brought his hands to squeeze her breàst. Julia felt disgusted, she turned but he turned her back to him and punched her face again.

There was blood now and she was in so much tears. He squeezed her face and forcefully kissed her, pushing his tongue down her throat. Julia tried struggling but it’s no use. He left her lips and roughly bit her neck.

Suddenly a car collapsed on his head and he fell on the bed, groaning. Julia looked up to see the woman in wedding gown, her eyes widened when she saw it wasn’t Martha.

“Who are you?” She asked shock.

“No time, let’s get out of here first” The woman helped Julia up and they both struggled to run out of the room.

Even without the person’s face being visible, one could still tell it was a man judging from the strong shoulders and tall height.

“Hmmmm” The muffled scream again. A woman was sitting on a chair. Her full body can’t be seen but she was ducked taped on the mouth, her wrists were tied to the chair. Her skin were filled with dirt and dried blood.

The footstep got closer till the strong man stood in front of the woman.

“Hmmmmm” She quirked her chair even harder as she struggled for a way out, anyway out. “Hmmmmm” she screamed again.

“Why don’t we tell Jake. It concerns him, it’s his mother” Kaelyn suggested.

“He won’t even look at me” Julia mumbled.

“When we all joined this team we made an oath about being loyal, certainly no fighting but two of us broke that rule last night” Coach said, stating the obvious as he looked at Rico and Jay.

All the pucks were standing in a horizontal line while the coach scolded them. Jay had bandaged on his head while Rico on his nose.

Jake poured another drink but Kelvin snatched the glass from him and emptied on the sink. Jake took another one but Kelvin still emptied it and this time he smashed the whole bottle on the floor.

Jake did not return home immediately. He was at an empty park, the only light was the street light. He sat on the bench and shut his eyes tight as he recalled all that happened earlier.

Jake shut his eyes tight and pushed her hands away from his face.

Amanda scoffed. “Do you think staying here and feeling depressed will make you feel better? Why not just get back at her” She moved closer to him and leaned to his face.

“I know a really good place we can go, be alone and trust me Jake. I’ll make you forget all about her” She whispered on his lips. “It will look like she never existed”

The alcohol effects were there but Jake could still think straight, he turned away from her and she rolled her eyes angrily.

“I don’t get it Jake, she fucking fooled you!!” She almost yelled.

“And you think sleeping with you would solve everything? Amanda you’re a girl for crying out loud and you really should throwing yourself at people!” Jake told her.

“I’m not throwing myself at anyone, I’m just trying to help you. Besides I like you” She moved closer to him again. “More than Julia ever did, I’m real Jake” She was pleading this time.

There was a moment of silence before Amanda broke it

“You know what Jake? It was a dull morning, at least that was what two people would use to describe how today felt. Jake just finished showering and dressing up, he opened the door to meet Julia coming out of her room which was opposite him.

Julia slowly let Jake go and they both went to the dining room to settle for breakfast.

“So since the wedding is tomorrow why won’t we start following the procedures for today?” Sydney asked.

“The bridal shower” Sydney replied. “You’re not allowed to see Martha until tomorrow at the alter so we are planning to lodge a hotel and celebrate her last night of being single and you should do the same too”

“After breakfast we are leaving and you both can stay here. Invite your friends if you want” Sydney said with a happy smile.

After breakfast, Sydney was packing the bags for the trip while Julia was making calls with her friends.

“Yes it’s something I don’t want you guys to miss on” She said. “I’ll see you there, thanks” After hanging up, she saw that Sydney had packed all the bags.

“You seem so excited about my parents wedding” Julia mumbled.
