For sometime it became hard to see Bella as I couldn’t gather enough confidence to face her family.
She began writing her NECO and then she occasionally come to my house straight from exams or to my work place and then we buy things eat, laugh, joke, play and do a lot of trouble.
Our plans were still intact. Later on, we were called for a meeting by our Zonal pastor at our Church’s headquarters.
Some few faces were there excluding Bella’s mother because according to them they’ve seen that the presence of Bella’s mother in our meeting might make Bella not to talk or make the right decisions when asked questions. So the mother wasn’t invited.
We were asked if we are ready to marry each other and then we said yes. We went through series of advises, talks and situations and then the meeting ended.
The church even promised to rent a comfortable house for us and also set up a business for us and that made us hopeful.
We began serving our suspension. She was later transferred to a different parish and I remained in the original parish we both served in.
That separation was a bad thing to me but I had no choice, no choice at all.
I wasn’t really buoyant financially and that was a weakness for us. The church wanted us to get married as they feel it will be better that way but Bella’s mother was typically against that option. She felt we were not ready, I am not established, Bella was a small girl although she was 19 years of age.
Bella’s mother was totally against it. Bella really wanted us to get married since she couldn’t stand the foul talks that kept coming from her mom and elder ones at home.
I on the other hand wanted the marriage but I was thinking, how will I take care of her and the baby. I didn’t have a standard job, I was as broke as a church rat.
Where I am staying is like a ghetto, although Bella didn’t care about all of that but as a man I do care. I don’t want my child to grow up in that environment, i thought if she stay with her family the load wouldn’t be too heavy on me.
Although we were excited by the promises of the church but I told Bella let’s not trust the promises as we can’t trust the promises of men. So, we told the church leaders that we will consider getting married only after she has given birth and they agreed.
I was advised to go and learn work but i refused because i thought about it, why should I learn work now when i need money to start preparing for the baby’s coming?
I figured I needed to work and earn money not to go and learn work. If i go to learn work, who will sponsor the bills? Who?
I was sincerely frustrated, depressed and I became totally down mentally. As time goes on the stomach became big and big and then I was expecting the labour to start by ending of November but then on a Monday early morning I was awoken by the ringtone of my phone. I picked and then I heard Bella was on Labour and they are taken her to the hospital, I got up rushed to their house. I helped Bella and her mother into a keke napep to reach the junction where they will enter a bus to the hospital and then i told them I won’t follow them now as i have to go to work and look for money.
I went to work, met my boss and I told him my situation and that he should pay me my salary in advance so that i can at least pay a part of the hospital bill.
My boss told me that since i didn’t attend his church the previous day which was sunday, he will not give me anything, he said the only thing he can do for me is to allow me miss work today so that i can go and find where to get money for my problems.
Immediately I got a call from Bella’s mom and then she said they said Bella had to go through operation. My God! I felt like sitting down on the floor while crying. Apart from her chances of making it out through that operation base on the fact that the baby bridged, it also means that I have to find more money and I was told that the hospital are requesting for over 80k.
Where can i get that kind of money? My parents aren’t financially stable, her parents the same. What kind of problem have i brought to myself and every other person around me.
The only thing that didn’t cross my mind was suicide. But everything else came through my mind.
I left work that day, ran to the house and then told my dad the situation on ground. Other family friends were there also.
So, we decided to go to the hospital me and my dad because my mom travelled at that time.
We got to the hospital without a single kobo in my pocket. Immediately we entered the hospital, we saw Bella on a stretcher eyes closed, stomach flat it means they just finished the operation and then they took her to a ward.
We saw her father, and then he began talking with my dad. The mother came out and then immediately she saw us, she started shouting at me.
“What did you bring? How much do you have?”
My father and her husband tried to calm her down but she was still shouting at the top of her voice.
“I don’t want to hear any preaching. I want money, money is all i want to see. preaching won’t pay the hospital bills”
I couldn’t withstand the shouting, so i left and went to stay outside the gate of the hospital feeling worse than before. My father came and met me outside and we were just standing brainstorming.
All the people that I’ve talked to for help were just giving me excuses. Now because I don’t have money, I couldn’t see my child, i couldn’t enter the ward.
Personally, I don’t blame her. she was right, it was all my mess. i should have been able to pay the bills, i should have worked hard but all of that now was too late. Now money is the only thing that is important to me and to us all.
But nonetheless, God was able.
