She had told me to finish secondary school and stop since we have nobody to support my university education but I wanted to go further like my mates. I know most of my classmates who are already planning the University they want to attend because they had rich parents who will support them every inch of the way.
I opened the little key points book and scanned through some points it contained. I had read for about 30 minutes before Adaku turned severally on the bed and noticed that I was reading.
“Ahh, Nne are you reading? ” Adaku asked me with a sleepy voice. I looked at her for sometime without saying a word. Adaku should know by now that I don’t answer this kind of questions. You can’t see that I am reading and still be asking if I am reading. I consider that type of question as a rhetorical question. They do not actually need an answer.
“Mba nu. Ada, I’m not reading. I am marking your exam scripts ” I told her and continued my reading. Early morning reading that is entering my brain.
Adaku stood up from the foam, yawned and stretched herself to different angles and came closer to see what I was reading.
“Nne, I thought we both paid for exam runs under Mr. Sam or did he say he won’t be there for us today? tell me o let me know how to prepare ” Adaku said looking serious this time.
“He didn’t say anything but I just want to read. I paid for runs yes but I just want to read. What if a strong headed external invigilator comes today and refuse to take bribe, what do you think would happen?”
“Nne forget that thing. Stubborn and strong headed external invigilator has always been coming and I don’t need to remind you how it always turned out. All the teachers that collected money for runs will put heads together and gather some money to silence the external invigilators” Adaku said and she was right. The last time they came, I saw the kind of food with chicken laps the teaches bought for them. They were busy eating while answers were being distributed to those who paid for them. Each teacher had their own clients and they always made sure that the answers got to each of their clients.
Again Adaku was right but I stood my ground. I told her to continue hoping on expo and leave me alone to read my books. I lost focus on the reading but I kept staring at the texts as though I was reading. After the exams today, I may pack my things and return home to my mother or I may stay for few more days. I will truly miss the moments I had with my boyfriend here because back home, mother must not see me with a boyfriend. The thought of him came back to me again and this time, I pictured his handsome face smiling at me.
