“What happened? Why did you disobey my instructions? I told you not to release Amaka but I’m upstairs now and I can see her coming into the house with my husband. What happen? Why did you do this to me? Don’t you know she would expose me to my husband? You have ruined all my plan and this thing you did may ruin my life.” Princess was almost shedding tears as she spoke to Eleks on the phone. She was at the balcony of the big house and she was looking at Chief Egbe and Amaka as they were walking gently into the building. Her heart skipped. She became very uncomfortable.
“You should have called me and tell me she was returning home, at least let me run away to avoid being embarrassed and treated with scorn. You know she saw me when I came to your hide out and yet, you still went ahead to release her. Why did you do this?” Princess was still questioning Eleks.
“Madam Princess, I have no business with you anymore. My business with you ended the day I finished the contract you gave me. You asked me to investigate Amaka and I delivered on the job. Kidnapping is a different thing. I didn’t do that one for you. I did it for myself. Thanks for giving me the information on how to kidnap your husband and his pregnant side chick, but I’m sorry to announce that all the money made from it belongs to me. You have no share in it. I and my boys took the risk and all you did was provide information. Well, just so you know, I have shared the money with my boys and you will never be able to see me again. As for what would happen to you? Well, I don’t know. It’s your cross and you have to carry it alone.” Eleks said. He was laughing over the phone as he spoke to Princess. The laughter supposedly conveyed the message that Eleks has succeeded in his mission and is now swimming in the money he made through Princess.
Princess’ heart was pained a lot. She felt so terrible and bitter. She felt betrayed. She knew Eleks has plunged her into a chaotic situation.
“I’m in deep trouble. What am I going to do? Amaka will expose me and I will be arrested for conspiracy and aiding kidnapping and ransom taking. I did not even get any money from the deal. God, I don’t want to go to jail.” Princess said as her eyes welled up with tears. The thought of facing shame in the hands of Amaka and her husband disturbed her heart so much.
“I don’t think I will be able to face this shame. I can’t take it.” Princess declared as she attempted to jump off from the third floor of the four storey building. But just before she lifted her legs to end it all, Amaka came from behind and tapped her gently.
“Don’t do it Princess. There is no need to end it. There is still hope. Don’t worry, I will not tell anyone what you did to me and chief. No one will know that you were behind the kidnapping incident. Your secret is safe with me and I will take it to the grave. Come let’s go so that you can see the baby. He is so handsome.” Amaka said from behind. Princess was surprised to see her. She still looked haggard and disheveled due to the physical stress she passed through in the hands of the kidnappers. Princess did not say a word as she gently followed Amaka to where the baby was kept. When she saw the baby, she knew clearly that it belonged to her husband. The physical resemblance was too much.
When she finished observing the baby, Princess went to her room and started weeping. She remembered how many years she had lived with her husband without getting pregnant even for once. And then another lady got pregnant for the man just by using his male liquid fertilizer she picked from the dustbin. The situation troubled her heart greatly. She wept all day without coming out of the room. She starved herself. In fact, she had no appetite for food.
At around 7a.m the next day, Princess heard a knock on her door. She managed to stand up from the bed and opened the door. It was Amaka.
“I came to tell you that I’m going.” Amaka said. She was clutching her baby.
“Where are you going to and why?” Princess asked with surprise written on her face.
“I’m going back to my house.” Amaka said with a tender voice. She spoke with an emotional tone.
“Why are you leaving? I’m supposed to be the one to leave for you to stay. You have a baby for my husband now. Officially, you are the woman of the house. I’m just like a man, unable to get pregnant after many years. I’m not fit to be called a woman.” Princess said as tears rolled down her eyes again. Amaka entered the room and sat on Princess’ bed.
“Look, Princess, I was wrong in what I did. I was not supposed to have got myself pregnant without your husband knowing about it. What I did was despicable. I also brought the pregnancy into your house, and I almost destroyed your home. That is despicable if you ask me. I was consumed by my ambition to escape poverty through your husband. But now, he has lost almost all his money to the kidnappers.” Amaka said before pausing to attend to the baby who had started to cry. She unzipped her dress and brought out her milk factory and started to feed the baby. The baby grabbed the tip of the milk factory with his lips and started to feed happily.
“Look, I don’t blame you for kidnapping me. I don’t blame you for everything that happened after I came into your home like an intruder. You did what you did to protect your territory. If I were in your shoes, I would have done the same thing. So, don’t beat yourself up because of how you treated me or how you arranged for your husband’s kidnap. Any woman could have done the same to protect her home. I’m not holding it against you and the secret will die with me.” Amaka said. The baby had stopped feeding and she had pushed her milk factory into her dress and zipped up.
“So please, I want you to continue to live with your husband in peace. I will never come in between you and your husband. Please, the two of you should not separate. I know one day, you will get pregnant and have a baby of your own. Goodbye Princess.” Amaka said as she stood up and left the room. As she was going, Princess called her back.
“Please, can I carry the baby just once? I just want to feel a baby in my hands.” Princess said tenderly. Amaka turned and handed the baby to her. As the child reached her arms, she started weeping. She felt a lot of emotions. She handed back the baby to Amaka quickly and rushed back inside her room.
After Amaka left, Princess and her husband felt as if they were strange bedfellows. Although, Princess still cooked for her husband and they were still making love to each other, but they knew something terribly wrong had happened to their relationship and romance life. The love in their home was gone and it stayed like that for three months before they decided to talk and settle things.
“It was my fault. But this would never happen again.” Chief Egbe said to his wife.
“I have already forgiven you. I also have a good news.” Princess said.
“What’s the news?” Chief asked.
“I’m pregnant.” Princess said with excitement in her voice. Chief jumped up and hugged her passionately.
“Oh my goodness, I’m so happy. Finally having a child with my real love.” Chief exclaimed with a loud voice.
On the day that Princess gave birth, they came home from the hospital and met a surprise at home. When they came back, the gateman gave Chief a bag. When he opened the bag, he saw so much money. There was a note in the bag and he quickly rushed and read it. Princess listened attentively as her husband read the short note.
“Dear Chief Egbe. I hope this meets you well. I’m the man who kidnapped you. I did not really need your money. I only wanted to teach you a lesson. All the money I took from you as ransom is in this bag. Please, stay faitful to your wife and never go outside in search of women because in the end, you stand to lose many things. I know you are a wise man and you must have learned your lesson.” The not reads. Princess was shocked and chief was stupefied. Their lives gradually went back to normal. Chief kept in touch with Amaka and took care of her and her baby.
