Lucas entered the house and sees his mom probably waiting for him. Adrian had dropped him off earlier, but he didn’t entered the house, because he wanted to spend some time alone to think about his future.

“Lucas!” Vivian called his name, standing up to her feet.

“Good evening Mom” He greeted, hugging her.

“It’s unlike you to come home late. Is everything ok?” She asked, patting his back.

“I’m fine Mom” He said in a low voice and Vivian broke the hug, cuddling his face.

“I know you just like how I know the back of my hands. I can detect when you are sad and when you are happy. So tell me son, what’s going on?” Vivian asked.

Lucas sighed and sat on the wooden chair. “Why is life so unfair to the poor mom? Why can’t we just have our way with things just like the rich? We struggle so hard and yet it is always futile” Lucas said, allowing his tears to flow.

Vivian sits beside him, holding his hand. “What happened Lucas?” She asked and Lucas looked at her with watery eyes.

“Remember how I study so hard for the scholarship exam, right? I had months of sleepless nights, so I will be able to pass mom, but all my efforts went down the drain”

“But I thought you pass the exam?”

“Yes I did, but I won’t be admitted into that college, because I was replaced by another guy whose family is ready to pay millions of dollars for his admission. What am I going to do mom? I had all expectations that I was going to be a college student. I can’t be a surgeon anymore” Lucas said.

“Who told you that you can’t achieve your dreams of becoming a surgeon? You may have not been admitted to that school, but that doesn’t mean other schools won’t give you admission tomorrow. Beside you are just seventeen all hope in becoming a surgeon is not lost, okay”

“But you know how expensive being a student surgeon is mom. We have absolutely nothing. Even if I work myself to death, I won’t be able to pay for my fees or other projects that comes with it. That scholarship was my only hope, but it slipped off my hand way before I could claim it. Why is life so cruel, mom? Is being poor a crime?” Lucas asked, sobbing.

“Being poor is not a crime Lucas. If everyone in this world is rich, there won’t people out there selling goods or rendering services to other people. Just like how the fingers aren’t equal is the same with humans too. So don’t be saddened okay, there’s always a hope for every one”

“Thanks Mom” Lucas said hugging his mom.

“I am always here for you son” He said patting his hair tenderly.

“Jane doesn’t know about this, so don’t tell her mom”

“She doesn’t know about your scholarship exam?” Vivian asked and Lucas broke the hug.

“I didn’t tell her about the scholarship exam because I wanted to surprise her, but since I will no longer obtain the scholarship exam, there’s no need telling her about it I will just make her sad by disclosing it to her”

“Jane is your best friend, she deserves to know. Just because she can’t see doesn’t mean you should use it to your advantage”

“I am not Mom. Jane has too much problems already, I don’t want to add to it. Where is Grace anyways. Is surprising she is not in the living room watching TV” Lucas asked, cleaning the traces of tears in his face.

“She has gone to bed”

“Grace? Sleeping already? Is she running a high temperature, or probably sick with typhoid?” Lucas asked.

“No she’s not. Have you forgotten you banned her from watching her favorite action movies. Grace might be stubborn, but when it comes to you, she respects you like there’s no tomorrow. If I was the one who banned her from watching those movies, she won’t have listened to me, but since the order came from you, she’s taking your order seriously” Vivian said and Lucas sighed.

“I will just check up on her” Lucas took up from the wooden chair and went to Grace’s room. He saw her sleeping with her one of her leg on the ground, and the other one on the bed.

He smiled and went to her. He place her leg which was on the ground on the bed and covered her with the duvet. He sat beside her caressing her forehead.

“Where’s Adrian? Did he come back home last night?” Rebecca asked, as the maids served her breakfast.

“Yes he did” The maid who saw Adrian last night, answered.

“Where is he?”

“He is in his room” Another maid answered.

“Go get him”

“I called him earlier so he could eat breakfast, but he said he is not hungry”

“If you don’t want to lose your job then do as I have ordered you to” Rebecca said with a seriously look, and the maid who answered her about Adrian being in his room quickly went to Adrian’s room to call him.

She knocked on the door when she arrived, and Adrian opened the door.

“I thought I told you I am not hungry”

“I know that sir Adrian, but your mom sent for you. She threatens to fire me if I don’t come with you” The maid said. Feeling sorry for the maid, Adrian decided to follow her downstairs.

“Good morning mom” He greeted.

“And what’s so good about this morning? Are you happy that you embarrassed me in front of so many people. I’m the owner of this town, and thanks to you, newspapers about last night is spreading all over the place!!!” Rebecca shouted hitting her hand on the table. The maids flinched in fear, but Adrian didn’t because he was already used to his mom’s anger.

“Adrian!! Adrian!!! What are you all looking at!!!” Rebecca shouted at the maids, and they bowed their heads.

Adrian kept driving without any direction until he found himself in Jane’s house. He came down from the car and sees Jane sitting outside as usual. The anger he was feeling subsided after he saw her face.

“Who are you?” Jane asked when she heard footsteps.

“It’s me, Adrian”

“Adrian” Jane said with a smile, trying to stand up to her feet, but Adrian was quick to go to her, and he held her.

“What are you doing here so early, Adrian?” Jane asked.

“I was just driving around and somehow I ended up here” He said, and Jane smiled.

“What about you Jane? You said you are a second year student in high school, so why aren’t you going to school today?” Adrian asked.

“Don’t tell me you don’t know the days of the week? Today is Sunday” She said.

“Really? I didn’t know”

“Oh my, you and Lucas are so much alike. He lost track of the months and you don’t know the days of the week” Jane said, and Adrian smiled.

“Who are you talking to Jane?” Roseline asked, coming out from the house.

“Good morning Ma’am”

“Adrian. What’s are you here so early?” Roseline asked.

“I was just driving around, so I decided to check up on Jane”

“Send my greetings to them” Roseline said, and Adrian nod, slightly.

“Have more sausages” Roseline said with a smile, dropping four sausages on Adrian’s plate.

He wanted tell them about his willingness to help Jane see again, but he decided to save it for another day probably when doctor Ben comes back to Dashie.

Grace stuck a lollipop in her mouth, as she walked home, she was almost looking like a boy, because of the way she was dressed.

“I’d be the happiest person on earth if Lucas allow me to watch those action movies. I need to learn more skills” She said, and kicked an empty can of soda she saw on the ground. She took the alley part of the street and that’s when she saw some boys bullying a younger boy.

“Is he a moron? Why can’t he fight back?” Grace said, trying to go to them, but she stopped.

“Don’t do it Grace. I know people always annoy you everywhere you go, but don’t do it. Lucas will get more angry at you” Grace said, turning her back to leave, but she stopped halfway.

“A few kicks to reset their useless brains won’t be bad” Grace said and without hesitation, she walked up to them like an actor from an action movie.

She didn’t even have a conversation with them, she just went straight to the point, by kicking their faces, and the way she fought you won’t believe she was just fourteen years old.

“Who are you?” The older boys asked.

“Repeat that question again, and we will go for another round. Do you want to get beaten, what are you all still doing here?” She asked trying to kick them again, and they quickly ran away.

Grace look at the boy who was still on the ground, and she scoffed, walking away.

“Hey” The boy said, standing to his feet, and Grace furrowed her eyebrows before looking at him.

“What?”

“Thank you for helping me”

“If you want me to accept your gratitude, become stronger and stop being a weakling”

“What’s your name?” The boy asked

“I don’t tell strangers my name” Grace said.

“My name is Craig, I will become stronger so you can accept my gratitude”

“Whatever” Grace said, and walked away.

“I’m going to become stronger, that’s a promise!!!” He said in a loud voice, so Grace could hear him. Meanwhile, Grace chuckle as she walked home.

Debra keep sighing as she waited patiently for Jane to pass by. She has made inquiries about Jane and she was told she was a student of a public school.

“I think you should go for your photoshoot, Debra. Just let the blind girl be” Her driver said.

“One more from you and you’re fired” She said and peeped out from the window of her car, and she saw Jane and Lucas.

“Who the heck is that guy?” Debra muttered, looking at Jane and Lucas who were smiling at each other. Debra smirked when she saw Lucas going back inside the school.

“Perfect timing” She said, and got down from the car.

“Where are you going?” Her driver asked.

“Just shut up” Debra said. She closed the car door, and approach Jane.

“Hey you” She said.

“Debra” Jane said, snuggling backward.

Debra scoffed and said. “You recognize my voice, I see you aren’t stupid likes your eyes”

“What do you want from me?” Jane said, getting scared.

“What I want from you? Well I am going to show you” Debra said and grabbed her hair.

“Debra you are hurting me” Jane said, crying.

“Well that’s what I want. I want you to be hurt for trying to come between I and Adrian. You are a blind girl, so live your life as a blind girl!!!” Debra shouted at Jane, and slapped Jane so hard on the face.

Jane fell to the ground hurting her knee. She tried to stand up to her feet, but Debra pushed her to the ground again, and she fell the ground hurting her knee the more.

Debra smiled wickedly, as she watched Jane cry. She squat in front of Jane who was crying. “I thought you are brave but you’re just a weakling. Come to think of it, what can a helpless blind girl like you possible do? When I am done with you, you won’t go near Adrian again” Debra said and tried to slap her again, but Adrian held her hand from behind.

“Adrian” Debra called his name.

“What the heck are you doing to Jane!!!” He yelled at her angrily.

“I’m only here to make her pay for coming between us. She’s just a wrenched blind girl!!!”

“I told you not to call her a wrenched blind girl again!!!” Adrian shouted at her, trying to slap her, but his hand hanged in the air. One thing he can’t do in this world was raising his hand on a girl.

Lucas who went back to his class to get his textbook came out from the school building, only to see his best friend on the ground. The smile on his face instantly disappeared.

“Jane!” He called her name rushing towards her.

“Lucas” Jane called his name, crying.

“What happened to you Jane, why are you crying?”

“I slapped her that’s why she’s crying” Debra said, and Lucas looked at her with rage.

“You slapped my best friend?”

“Yes I did, and what are….. ”

Debra couldn’t finish what she had in her mouth when Lucas slapped her. She hasn’t recovered from it when Lucas gave her another resounding slap.

“How dare you….. ”

Lucas grabbed her hair cutting her short, and by that time, students were already striding out of the school’s building.

Lucas didn’t stop holding her until he got to the big pothole that was inside the school, and without thinking he pushed her inside the smelling pothole, and her body mixed with the pothole water.

“Some body get me a scissors” Lucas said with rage.
