I wasn’t surprised when I heard this four years ago. Everyone thinks I’m okay, because I’m the man and because I’m older, they think I can handle it all well but the truth is that I’m breaking inside everyday.
My dad died on my birthday. Some people says it’s my bad luck and I’ve always thought so because if he was never rushing home to give me a surprise then he wouldn’t have gotten caught up in the accident that ended his life.
Mom was a mess, she cried her eyes out, locked herself in her room, starving, depressed and I had to stay strong for Taylor, for mom. I told myself I can do it. When everyone calls us fatherless, Taylor cries to mom but I act strong, I can take it, I’m the man, I should be strong like dad, don’t take their harsh words too heart, you can do it Derek.
I have told myself this all the time. Dove walks into my life years back, little just like Taylor and I should see her as a sister but I didn’t, there’s this attraction and I know she would be the one to light up my dark world but then I caught our moms. There goes my chance with Dove, there goes Dad’s woman. I can remember mom swearing to dad that she would love no one else.
My head hurts. I had lied to the doctor that I didn’t have a parent, I even ran out of the hospital and destroyed my brain scan . It’s just a stupid brain disease I can handle it, turns out I can’t handle everything.
“How long Derek? How many years ago did you found out about this?” Mom ask in heavy tears.
“Four years ago” I muttered.
Mom sits on the floor, she couldn’t find her legs anymore. I don’t want this, I don’t want anyone to cry for me or give me this look of a person who’s going to die.
“How didn’t I know about this? What kind of mother am I?” I’ve never seen my mom this sad as she burst out in tears.
“Mom it’s not you, it’s me” I try to coax her but she shook her head, refusing to believe.
“I’m so selfish. If I wasn’t so caught up in things I love then I would have sat you down and ask you questions. I would have asked you what was really happening and why you chose to change yourself. It never occurred to me, I’m so foolish” Mom cries.
Taylor bends beside her. “You tried your best to watch over us. Don’t blame yourself mom, the doctor said Derek had forty percent chance of survival. At least forty is before then zero” Taylor tried talking to mom.
“And I’d recommend we start the surgery as soon as possible” The doctor adds
I can’t bring myself to look at Dove. I bet she’d be so scared and I don’t want her to me. If I had known I wouldn’t have been able to fight this feelings for Dove then I would have done something about this sooner. I’m not scared of death but I’m scared of what would make me never see those big brown innocent eyes anymore.
My Dove, my love, I’d never leave you.
After everyone left, I was transferred to another department of the hospital where I can get my appropriate surgery. Two nurses walks towards me with a scissors. My heart skips beats, I know what’s about to happen but I have to do it. I better let go of my hair if at all I’m going to see my family again, If I want to see Dove and her innocent smile again, if I want to hear her scream as I screw her brains out.
“Are you ready?” One of the nurses asks me.
I suck in a deep breath and nod. It wasn’t easy to watch my hair fall off my head unto the ground. This image would be forever stuck in me.

I just had a weak smile as a watch Jerry make fun of my new look. “Like seriously men, I’ve never ever pictured you bald before, you look worse than what I’d even think you’d look like” Jerry laughs but I know deep down he wants to break down.
“Men you don’t have to cheer me up. Just let it out” I roll my eyes and Jerry didn’t waste a second to burst out in tears.
“You’re the best friend I’ve ever had in years men. I hope you’ll be over. I’d put you in all my prayers and I hope to see you well in the future, definitely with your full hair back” He chuckle at the past and also wipe his tears.
I can’t help but smile, tears threatening to fall off my eyes but I’d only let them out once I’m out of here, safe and sound.
Jerry folds his fist and stretch them to me. “Fist bomb?” He asks and i stretch my shaky hands to bump his.
Taylor comes in next.
“We might not be the best brother and sister but I really hope you’d be fine” She cries.
“I will be, trust me” I smile and she flickers my bald head. “Ouch what’s that for?” I’m confuse.
“Hit me back once your get out” She sticks her tongue out and leaves. I can’t help but chuckle, classic Taylor.
The last person to walk in is literally the last person I want to see. ππ°π·π¦.
