Tracy, her husband and her father hurried out of Tafeko’s shrine, afraid of how strangely fearful Tafeko suddenly became.
His eyes became crimson red, the sword in his hand was vibrating and his entire body seemed to now have been possessed by a strange spirit.
Ozonge began to howl where he was, obviously trying to make a last attempt at being alive, because he was chanting incantations, and moving his only fingers to conjure some powers.
Tafeko’s wife just returned to the shrine. She had gone into the forest to get some herbs to complete her medications for prevention of the near accident of conceiving Ozonge’s seed.
She saw the battle brewing, and regretted feeding the Ă nimal called Ozonge, just like her husband had insisted the gods wanted them to do.
From the time Ozonge got tied to the tree, Tafeko’s wife wanted nothing but to keep punishing him until he died of starvation.
But Tafeko insisted on enquiring from his gods, and they instructed him to keep feeding Ozonge because his time to die hadn’t come.
She didn’t have a choice but to do as her husband had asked her, after all, he didn’t stop her plans of whipping him with a horse whip, every three hours, until nightfall.
Ozonge got fed, but was fed up with life, because he kept receiving the harsh treatments Tafeko’s wife meted out on him, for days.
She whipped him so cruelly, giving him cuts everywhere, and ensuring that his third leg wasn’t spared.
The oracles informed her husband that if measures weren’t taken, she’d be eternally connected to Ozonge’s lineage because one of Ozonge’s overzealous spèrmatozoa had made it’s way to her waiting egg, on the day he abused her in Tafeko’s shrine.
So she had been on the routine of medication her husband recommended, and was just returning from the forest, when she saw the evĂŻl Ozonge battling with her husband.
Despite the fact that Ozonge was left with just one hand, he was bent on making sure that Tafeko fell with him, and this made the scorned woman livid.
All the time he was tied to the tree, he had been struggling to free his hand enough to get the ring on one part his dread locked hair, but have remained unable to reach it, until Tafeko tampered with the rope, to get what he needed for Bruce’s treatment.
He heard Tafeko order the people that had visited his shrine to run, the very moment his hand touched the ring, even though Tafeko had his back to him and didn’t need anyone to tell him that he had to strike fast, or he would be deĂĄd.
Tafeko turned around, and tried to aim his sword at Ozonge, but his hands suddenly became too heavy, making him unable to move it again.
Ozonge was laughing môckingly at Tafeko, and was wriggling his body, to remove the remaining rope on his body when Tafeko’s wife appeared.
She could see that he kept pointing the ring in his hand at her husband, while he struggled to get out of the bounds.
This made her understand without much thoughts that the reason her husband’s hands were frozen to a spot, was no doubt because of the ring Ozonge was pointing at him.
She quickly loaded her catapult with a stone she picked up beside her, and aimed at the ring, knocking it off his hand in one shot.
Tafeko’s sword moved instinctively, hitting Ozonge’s neck, and got his throat slashed at once.
Ozonge’s eyes opened in shock, as blood began to spurt out of his throat, sprinkling the entire area around him, and making his body begin to collapse.
Tafeko stood over his body, gave another angry strike, and Ozonge’s head came falling off, and rolled all the way to the shrine.
His wife began to shout in happiness, praising him non-stop for being a tool, through which the gods put an end to the sufferings of the people.
Ozonge’s body was thrown out to feed the vultures, and his head, sacrificed to the gods Tafeko served.
Meanwhile, back in Chief Scot’s compound, his wife had returned home and was still not ready to speak to her husband. She had gone out with the hopes that her husband would come looking for her, but he didn’t.
She returned home, and was shocked that he wasn’t at home. Her thoughts began to fly here and there, thinking of what she was going to do, if her husband had going to be with Ifeoma
Stephanie saw her daughter and Bruce return with her husband from wherever they had gone, but wasn’t in the mood to speak to any of them because she was so sure that he’d ask her where she had been, but again, he ignored her completely.
“Mother, where have you been?” Tracy rushed to her sides, but she looked at her, turned away, and tried to walk out of the house.
“Hey mummy, I know you’re very upset with me, but I just had to do what I had to do, to help us all. Please calm down, okay!
“When we got here, and you kept speaking with so much feà r for Ozonge, I just had to speak up because I could see that you were truly too afraid to do the things you should have done from the beginning.
“I’m sorry if I made you sad, but it’s for the best that I did what I did. See now, father didn’t get so mà d after all, so you can now be free to live your life, without having to go about with the weight of the secret you have been keeping.
“He didn’t cut off ties with me because of the findings, neither did he send you away.
“I think it’d be better if you let the past remain in the past, and mend fences with father, to put all the unfortunate past behind” Tracy advised.
“He may not have cut off ties with you, but I have. I won’t have anything to do with an unfilial child like you.
“As for him, he needs to come to terms with the fact that he has never been a good person, the entire time.
“I had reasons for keeping the things I kept from him, but what excuse does he have? The flimsy excuse that mama wanted someone else for him?
“He had me believing that he was warding his mother off, while he was going behind my back to sleep with that same woman she married for him, and kept going back, until they now have children out of their unholy union” Stephanie blasted.
“Enough woman! I have been trying to restrain myself from telling you the things just the way you should hear it for personal reasons.
“Don’t push me. Don’t you dare!” chief Scot roared, his eyes glistening in anger, as he spoke.
“Oh keep quiet Scot. What will you do? Did I force you to marry me? Did you not know that my family compulsorily needed that ritual before marriage?” Stephanie asked, sounding completely unremorseful.
“No Stephanie, you didn’t force me to marry you, neither will you force me to remain married to you, now that I truly understand what my mother saw all these while” he told her, panting angrily as he spoke to him wife, then he turned to Tracy.
“Please my dear, you need to hit the road now. I don’t want you to arrive home very late.
“I will keep looking out for what to do about your case, but for now, please do not stress yourself and keep your husband waiting, on the account of my issues with your mother.
“We will definitely sort ourselves out” he told his daughter, seeing how distraught she looked, and considering how she may be affected by what was going on between them.
Bruce had been sitting quietly at the corner, because even without being told, he knew that his mother in-law could have his head if he said a word.
If she considered him a stranger when he tried to give his opinion on a matter that concerned his wife, then she will definitely call for his crucifixion if he tried to make any contribution, so he kept his thoughts to himself.
And for him, as long as the woman didn’t make his wife do something he was going to be hĹ«rt about, he didn’t care what she did.
He found it really annoying that the woman who should be most remorseful for what she had done, was trying to make her husband feel bad and be there one who begs her.
“You know babes, I can’t really get it. Why does your mum act the way she does?” Bruce asked his wife, as soon as they drive out of the compound.
“That’s the problem with my mum. Right from time, my dad had always been the one running after her. She must have become so used to being pampered and cajoled to let peace reign whenever they have issues, whether she is wrong or not. I think that’s why she is behaving the way she is doing now.
“But I really feel for her, because I think she is yet to see that this situation is different from all others” Tracy replied her husband, then he told her that he feared that her mother’s behaviour will eventually send her father to his second wife permanently.
“I pray it doesn’t, but if it does, she will have nobody to blame for her loss” Tracy concluded.
They had left chief Scot’s house at his insistence that day, and kept talking about the things going on, as they drove home.
Tracy was quite tired and worried, but she didn’t want to sleep, because she feared that Uloma could attà ck her right in the car.
They arrived Porthacourt earlier than Bruce imagined, and he decided to see doctor Jude before heading home.
Tracy chose to stay in the car to wait for him, because she was truly tired, and Bruce was thankful for it because he wasn’t ready to let his family members see her yet.
He rushed in to see doctor Jude, and was shocked to hear Jude ask him if he was messing with his head.
“What the hell is going on with you Bruce? Look at your back?” Jude screà med, startling Bruce.
“What happened? Is it worse now?” Bruce asked Jude, his heart pounding in fear, but Jude was looking at his back, a deep frown on his face, without saying a single word.
