She took a quick peek at the caller ID and terror immediately struck her. She cleaned her eyes with the back of her palm just to be sure she was seeing clearly.
Her eyes were not playing any tricks, she couldn’t believe it!
It read…”Vivian.”
Her legs danced in fear, her jaw dropped open.
How is it possible that her dead decaying daughter was calling her husband?
She was transfixed to the spot, and because of the shock that had clothed her she wasn’t able to answer the call before it stopped ringing.
“Jesus!” She screamed.
She placed her both hands on her head.
“Aliyah you are fine, just take a deep breath. That wasn’t your daughter’s name, you must have seen something else,” she soliloquized. She was panting very hard.
She managed to sit back on the bed so she could relax her confused mind. She was feeling like she was beginning to go insane, her innocent mind was as confused as a chameleon stuck inside a bag of Skittles. All these happenings were too much for her to bear.
Suddenly, Desmond’s phone began vibrating and dancing on the wooden table, it’s piercing ringtone sent shivers down Aliyah’s spine. Slowly she got up from the bed and picked up her husband’s phone.
The caller was still Vivian. She answered it.
“Hello! Umm… Vivian, my dearest child. Is this you?”
A thick voice came blasting on her ear drums.
“Ehen! Who be this?”
Aliyah didn’t respond.
“Chuks, I think say na the father line you dial? Why I dey hear woman voice.” The person asked someone beside him.
“Yes na,” came a reply from the background.
Aliyah could hear the bustling sounds of a motor park, the lively chants of hawkers calling out for people to purchase their goods.
“Hello! Who be this na? You no dey talk?”
“Umm… I’m… I’m Vivian’s mother.”
“Vivian? Who be Vivian?”
“Look, I see this phone for bush path when I go clear my uncle farm.”
“No be only am o, I follow see the phone o!” came a voice from the background. It must have been the Chuks.
“Me and my friend found the phone,” the caller had now switched to proper English.
“As we took the phone back, we charged it and we were surprised when it came on. Chuks said I should sell it…”
“Na lie, it was both of us that wanted to sell it,” Chuks interfered.
“Fine, we wanted to sell it but as we did not see any buyer we decided to return it to the owner.”
“Well, the owner of the phone is dead and I’m her mother.” Aliyah finally spoke.
“Dead? Ahh! What killed her?”
“That’s not really your business, how do I get the phone back?”
“Ah ah! Madam no be for free Na, you suppose find boys something.”
“How much?”
“Fifty thousand, just fifty thousand is enough.”
Immediately Aliyah ended the call. She was already boiling with rage as she remember her dead daughter.
“I must kill whoever that took away the life of my innocent child. Even if it’s my husband, I don’t care. That person must pay!”
Just then her husband walked in, he looked very jolly.
“Wow! The food was delicious, I enjoyed every bit of it. Indeed I married the world’s best chef.” He said laughing heartily like a pirate after a successful capture.
“Aliyah, what’s the matter? You look… worried.”
There was no response.
“Is it because of our daughter’s death, I told you to stop thinking about it, it’ll just make things worse. Or do you think the death of our only child didn’t weigh down on me? It did, but I realised that over thinking wouldn’t change anything, it’ll just make you depressed.”
“Some men called.”
“Some men? From where?”
“Some men called your phone with our daughter’s line.”
“How did they get it?” Desmond asked, his eyes reflecting confusion.
“They found the phone somewhere and want to return it,”
“Oh! That’s good, at least we can use it can help the police in getting closer to whoever was responsible for our daughter’s death.”
“They were asking for an outrageous amount?”
“How much?” He asked.
“Fifty thousand naira.”
“It’s not a problem then, let’s get back to them.”
Her husband was determined, they contacted the men and made the transaction.
But, the guys did not fulfill their own part, they had duped them. They must have went on to sell the phone despite collecting money from Vivian’s parents.
The couple was devastated, saddened, especially Aliyah. Desmond tried comforting her but he wasn’t doing any good.
Aliyah had finally made up her mind to forget about her daughter. The dead is dead, there is nothing you can do to bring them back.
She accepted her sad fate.
One week after.
Aliyah woke up around 5am to start preparing breakfast. It had become her new routine to avoid complains from her mother in law.
As she was working tirelessly in the kitchen, her eyes caught something from her kitchen window. She saw a figure in the dark, dragging a sack and the sack appeared very heavy.
It was like something pushed Aliyah, a force compelled her. Aliyah quickly opened the door in her kitchen and slowly followed after this person.
She stepped lightly on the ground, to make sure her footsteps give only a feint sound.
Suddenly, the figure diverted into the bushes by the side of the road. Aliyah’s heart drummed heavily against her chest, goosebumps were all over her skin and the fear in her was at its peak.
She peeped into the bushes and she saw what the person wore. She saw the person turn the sack upside down pour things out of it.
She didn’t see what it was, but she immediately began running back. Her footsteps were now loud and she could hear the person run out the bushes.
Aliyah hid by a corner.
She could feel the person’s eyes searching the street. A few moments later, the figure walked passed her and when she was sure that the person had gone far enough she came out of hiding.
Aliyah hurried back home, she moved even faster than a Cheetah.
When she finally got home she began to ask herself questions, she concluded that the person must have probably gone to throw dirt.
It was later around 9 am that her thoughts were cleared.
The neighbourhood was in panick. Again!
She rushed outside to where people were gathered. And when she got there what she saw made her gasp.
It was different human body parts, exactly where the person she saw earlier that morning poured out the things in the sack.
The realization made her quiver, she turned to leave but her eyes met someone in the exact clothes the person wore. She looked at the face and you wouldn’t believe who it was…
