Sophia and Jovani returned to Sophia’s mum that night to inform her of their plans to get married. She had been waiting and expecting the news to come, but she felt the engagement was kind of impromptu.
Nevertheless, she gave them her blessings, and wished them fruitfulness when they eventually get married, but to her surprise and satisfaction, Jovani had told her he wished to have a court marriage with his woman before his parents returned from their trip abroad.
Jovani knew there was no way Mrs. Dike was going to allow him go ahead with his plans if she knew for a fact that his father had rejected Sophia, and that Kelly had said Sophia had very little chances of bearing children.
So he got Sophia to agree with him on the plans to keep things to themselves until they were legally married.
Sophia’s mum had however insisted that he allowed her speak with either of his parents before she could append her signature on their wedding certificate.
“My father is a very busy person, and I know he’d be only too glad to welcome my wife when he comes around, but for now, we’ll have to go ahead to put things in the right perspective.
“Sophia and I have studied each other for a long while, and we know we are compatible enough to embark on the forever journey together.
“So, we’re getting married now mummy” Jovani informed Mrs Dike.
“You’re right my son. And I’m very happy that things are working perfectly between you two. You have my blessings” Mrs Dike told him before he left that night.
Jovani submitted the necessary papers to the marriage registry department and waited for the compulsory three weeks required by law, his heart thudding on the different occasions things almost got out of his control.
First, Brad had found out about their proposed marriage and began to raise dusts. He stormed Mrs Dike’s residence, insisting that she allowed him talk to Sophia.
He had got way beyond what he expected from Mrs. Dike who bath him with a bucket full of water when he refused to leave her house.
Jovani had arrived the scene to meet Sophia nearly committing mūrder. He had his heart in his mouth as he saw Sophia walking stealthily towards Brad with a kitchen knifë as he stood screaming about Sophia belonging to him.
And if he hadn’t the power and the ability to calm Sophia down, she would have truly spoilt everything for everyone after she cornered Brad with the knifë.
It took all he could say and promise for Sophia to hand him the knifë, and it took all the self restraint in him to stop at the first punch he threw at Brad.
Mrs Dike was practically shivering when she saw a new and unprecedented Jovani as he activated the beãst mode after he had successfully taken the knifë from Sophia.
“The nerves of you to show up here after all you did! Brad you got the guts to show your unwanted face here after you played with my fiancé’s chances of birthing children and ran off to get a wife you think can birth you children!
“No wonder you were so confident that she won’t take in while you kept her as a s3x tool. I’m going to make you pay for all the pains you cost Sophia my love. Yes, in due time, I’ll make you live the rest of your life, in perpetual regret” Jovani told Brad before he threw him out of the house.
Jovani and Sophia were just recovering from the near disãsterous incident that followed Brad’s appearance and her mother’s reaction to the news of her chances of birthing her own children when his father dealt him a blow that nearly ruined his chances of ever being with Sophia again.
His mother had called him one early morning to inform him that his father was planning to visit Clara’s parents to perform the marriage rites and forcefully send her to him as wife.
“I know I shouldn’t be doing this son, but I can’t help feeling so concerned about that girl. I don’t know her story, but I feel so bãd for her, because her situation makes me recall what I went through as a young girl.
“You’re to wait for my signal and storm the venue of that traditional marriage, and inform all and sundry that you didn’t ask your father to perform the rites on your behalf.
“I have tried to talk to your father. I reminded him of my own case and how I was declared unfit to marry him because of a health condition I have, but he had gone against all odds to marry me because he believed in the power of the love we share. He married me, and even though I could birth only you, even though a doctor always has to be on a standby for my sake, our marriage has all these years been blissful.
“But your father is just something else when it comes to his friend, and I won’t stand by, and watch him put the interest of his friend above the interest of my only son” his mother had told him, moving Jovani to tears
“Thanks Mommy, thanks for being a true mother! You may not know it, but you have just saved your son’s life. I’ll always love you for this” Jovani had said before he rushed out to get ready for his mother’s signal.
And so it was that Jovani was able to stop his father from forcefully making him marry Clara who had happily doned a traditional attire, waiting for the official bride price to be paid.
“Jovani, if you step out of this house without apologizing to Engineer Philips and his family, and stand by to get married to Clara, them I’ll disown you!” his father had threatened as Jovani walked towards the door.
He stood still at once, looked back at his father with a face that mirrored the ãnger in him, then walked closer to his father before he spoke.
“Chief Jonah, you do not have to face the stress of having to go through any legal work to disown me after I walk out of this door, because my lawyer will be doing the needful as per announcing my new identity to the world after now.
“Yes Chief, the moment I walk out that door, I’m going to duly instruct my lawyer to see to it that the national dailies bear the change of name that will totally erase your name from mine.
“I will no longer be known and addressed as Jovani Jonah because I have decided to let you go on with the one, whose interest you have chosen to make paramount above mine.
“I do not wish to be your son again, because I believe being a father should go beyond just being the biological contributor of the spērmatozoà that fertilizes an egg to birth a child.
“Being a father should have made you know how and when to care for the emotional, physical and mental well being of your offspring.
“Goodbye Chief, you can go home when you’re done wining and dining with your friend. But if you must go on with the marriage rites, then, you must let them know the wife is yours” Jovani said before he stormed out of the house.
Jovani’s father sat dumbfounded, unable to fully process all that had just happened. He didn’t know how Jovani had found out about his moves, but most importantly, he didn’t know his son had the side of him he just showed him right there.
Engineer Philip, his friend tried to console him, and even became convinced that the young man should be allowed to follow his heart, but Clara was bent on pushing the old men to go ahead with the marriage.
Jovani’s mother was tired of sitting and staying quiet while her husband made a mess of himself, so she got up, and without fear or favour, informed Clara that she was never going to be a party to forcing her son into marrying someone who had once thrown his heart on a stone, not caring how much it could shatter.
“Honey, your son has told you his position on this matter. I have tried not to be the reason you have problems with your friend, but like Jovani said, if your concern for Clara’s interest is going to overshadow your concern for your immediate family, then I’m sorry, because if I walk out now, and you do not come with me, you may not have lost just your son, but your wife as well” Mrs Jonah said and walked out of the house
