“Young man, you had the guts, the effrontery, the temerity to come right into my daughter’s bedroom to look for her?” He said, the gun still pointing at me.
“I am sorry, Sir. She asked me to come in because she is sick and couldn’t come outside to see me. I have nothing with her, Sir. She is just a friend.” I explained, desperately.
“What’s your name?” He asked, lowering the pistol.

I bolted out of her bedroom, through their living room and out of the front door. I ran all the way home. I couldn’t take the risk to stop running. I thought he was chasing me. When I got to my neighbourhood, I stopped running and started walking normally. I didn’t have the energy to answer any questions from my mother should she see me running and started asking questions.
When I was finally settled at home, I started analyzing the situation. I had just come close to being shot by a soldier with many years of combat experience under his belt. It was all my fault. I shouldn’t have accepted Sylvie’s invitation to go into her bedroom, in spite of the fact that she was sick. But I needed help. I had gotten Violet pregnant and needed to eradicate it before anyone realizes. What was I going to do? I was scared and running out of options by the second. I did not know what to do and had no one to confide in.
The next day, I went to see Violet. I told her I wasn’t able to get any positive results from Sylvie. Hence, we might have to go with her concoction idea. She agreed and assured me that she was going to take it that night. I went home feeling a bit relieved. In my innocent and naïve mind, I was happy that by the next day, everything would be settled.
The next day, I wasn’t able to see Violet. But I didn’t bother much because I was thinking that the pregnancy had been terminated. Two days later, I went back to the city without even saying goodbye to her. I had made up my mind never to have anything to do without any village girl ever again. Now that the pregnancy had been terminated, or so I thought, it was time for me to be more careful with my decisions.
It had been about two months now and I hadn’t even talked to Violet. I was in the city, schooling. I knew my village adventures were over. I didn’t know that I was in for a big surprise. There was another event that required the people in the surrounding villages to come to the city for the celebration. I was sure Violet would show up because she was the one running her brother’s ice cream business. When I went to the ice cream line, I saw her. What I saw shocked me to the core. The pregnancy had fully developed. She looked bulky and her colour was glowing.
My heart sank. Violet was still pregnant. That could mean only one thing. She hadn’t taken the concoction. She had surely chickened out at the last minute, because she had given all assurances that she was going to take it. My day was immediately spoilt. As she didn’t have many customers at that time, I moved closer to her.
“Is that thing still there?” I asked in coded language.
“Yes”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“For heaven’s sake, Violet!! Didn’t you take the concoction?”
“I didn’t”
“Why?”
“I got scared. I was afraid I was going to die. Please, you have to understand.” She explained.
“OMG!! You already look so big. Looks like you can put to bed any moment from now. Haven’t your parents noticed?” I asked, sweating.
“They have”
“What have they said? Have they interrogated you? Have they asked who is responsible for the pregnancy?” I quizzed her.
“They haven’t, but I sure they will do that sooner than later.”
I was very disappointed. Why did Violet do such a thing. That meant any moment from now, my parents would find out. Everyone would find out and trouble would start. I didn’t wait for the celebrations to be over. I had suddenly lost interest in everything. I turned around and went straight home,
Three weeks later, I still hadn’t heard from Violet’s parents. For a start, it didn’t seem normal to me that with such an already fully developed pregnancy, her parents had not yet created any fuss. They hadn’t even questioned her. It didn’t seem okay to me. Things didn’t seem to add up. Could it be that there was some foul play somewhere? What was really happening? Were her parents just so callous or were they taking their time?
Whatever my answers to those questions were, one thing remained certain. I was spending sleepless nights. Everything scared me. I flinched at everything. I was living one day at a time, waiting for the day the issue would come up, for I was sure it definitely would. I hardly ever ate. I lived with my uncle in the city and each time he came home and said he had received news from my parents back in the village, I got scared and thought it was the Violet issue. I felt like Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus, trying to hold back the time.
One day, I stayed back after school so as to study for a while before going home. I hadn’t been able to concentrate all day because of the issue. At the end of the school day, when almost every other student had gone home, except for a few, I stayed back to do some catching up.
My head was deeply buried in my Geography notebook when one of my classmates told me that someone was looking for me. I raised my head and saw that it was my elder brother. He had come to our school on a rented bicycle because there were no okadas in the village back then. My heart fell in my stomach. What was my brother doing in our school at that time of the day? “Is anything the matter?” I asked, barely able to stand upright.
“Yes, she wants you to accompany her to the village. They say you have gotten someone’s daughter pregnant.”
