πΈ Picked From The Dustbin:
βCalm down madam! And please, donβt shout at me. You asked them to bring me here and they have brought me to you. Why are you now shouting as if Iβm about to escape? My pregnancy is already nine months and I cannot obviously run with it. So, calm down and donβt shout. There is no point shouting.β Amaka was talking confidently to Princess who was sitting on a stool before her. Amaka was not scared of the tough-looking boys holding loaded guns in the uncompleted building. Princess wondered where she got the courage to still open her mouth wide and talk despite being in clear danger.
βI ask you again. How did you get pregnant for my husband? Donβt test my patience. I can be very dangerous, I assure you.β Princess said, trying to sound very tough but Amaka was not cowed by the threats.
βLook madam, it is unfortunate that you donβt your husband. You donβt know that he is a community husband? Your husband that has slept with every lady in Lagos. You call that one husband? Look my sister, the man you call your husband does not actually belong to you alone. He is a community husband. He belongs to all of us.β Amaka said. Gradually, she was taking over the conversation and turning the table against Princess. She spoke very confidently and the things she was saying hit Princessβ heart like bomb. Princess did not want to ask the bad boys to harm her because of the pregnancy. She was angry but there was a limit to what she had the courage to do.
βIβm warning you to mind your tongue. Be careful with the things you are saying about my husband. If you donβt answer my questions right now, I will have your tongue removed with a knife.β Princess threatened. She knew her threat was an empty one. She was just trying to sound strong and to scare Amaka.
βLook madam Princess, or whatever they call you. Iβm not under any obligation to answer your question, but I will just tell you how and why I got pregnant for your husband. Like I said, your husband is our community property, he belongs to the community. He belongs to all of us and not you alone.
βI know you have gone to the hotel where I work and they must have told you that your husband is our biggest customer. Well, your husband has a permanent room there. No other guests uses that room except him. Every week, your husband lodges in that room with a different girl. He likes women a lot. Iβm the one who cleans that room every morning. And I used to wonder why your husband is such a chronic womanizer. Why would he be βchoppingβ every lady he sees in Lagos?β Amaka asked no one in particular. Princess was watching and listening to her calmly. Even the bad boys in the building had calmed down as they listened to Amakaβs story.
βI decided on my own that I will teach your husband a bitter lesson. Maybe after this lesson, he would be careful with his life. Every morning, while sweeping his hotel room, I come across many balloons in the dustbin. Some of the love-making balloons still contained male liquid fertilizer. I picked one of them and decided to try my luck and boom, I got pregnant. Now, Iβm carrying your husbandβs baby without him sleeping with me. Isnβt that great?β Amaka asked Princess sarcastically. She started laughing very loudly as if the situation at hand was funny. It was not funny, at least to Princess. Although, she already knew the truth, the pain she felt after watching the video earlier came back to her. Princes felt like slapping Amaka but she resisted the idea.
βAs I was saying, your husband will learn his lesson and stop being a womanizer. What I did would actually help his life. Number one, once your husband learns the truth about how he got me pregnant without touching me, he would think twice next time he wants to take a side cheek to a hotel. Also, he is going to take responsibility of this baby. You know, you people are yet to have any child, so there is no way your husband will push me out. He needs this baby more than I do. My plan has worked. He would eventually push you away and marry me because obviously, you are barren.β Amaka said. At that point, Princess was unable to control herself anymore. She raised her right hand to slap Amaka, but she quickly resisted the temptation. She dropped her hand again and started crying. She made up her mind to punish Amaka in a way that would make her feel pain.
βIβm not barren.β Princess said to Amaka.
βOh yes you are barren. If you are fertile, why havenβt you got pregnant all these years? Look at me now, your husband did not even touch me and I took in for him. You are barren my dear. Know this and know peace. You better start making plans to leave your husbandβs house because Iβm taking over as soon as this baby is born.β Amaka said with sarcastic laughter. Tears welled up Princessβ eyes. She stood up and started leaving the scene with pain in her heart.
βDonβt worry, I will not tell Chief that you are the one who kidnapped me.β Amaka said. It was then that Princess knew that Eleks also brought Chief Egbe to the uncompleted building.
βWhy did you kidnap my husband? I thought we agreed not to kidnap him?β Princess asked Eleks. She was still crying.
βDonβt you want money? Your husband has betrayed you. You have to get your pound of flesh by taking his money.β Eleks said in hush tones.
βGo home! I will send your own share of the money.β Eleks said.
βIn that case, let us change the plan. Letβs release only my husband and keep Amaka. We can now use her and take more money from him.β Princess said as she left the uncompleted building.
Chief Egbe was released after payment of N20 million ransom, but Eleks refused to release Amaka.
βI will drain your spirit and you will regret all the painful words you said to me today. As for you Chief Egbe, I will empty all your bank accounts and make you poor. You will regret cheating on me.β Princess said as she laughed out loud on her bed that night.
