🧏 Thou Shall Not Part Three:

The next month, I was selected to go for another evangelism outreach. The joy in my heart knew no bounds. I wasn’t excited because I was going to redeem the sinners. It was because I wanted to prove Jude wrong.

I wasn’t in the wrong place and I’ve learnt enough to defend my faith.

My hopes on meeting Jude started to waver when Steven took us to another destination. It wasn’t far from where I last met Jude but the distance was threatening to foil my plans.

“Thank God that we were taken to a different place. I don’t know what I would do if I see that horrible boy again” Tina whispered to me as we alighted.

We went about to preach to people about the Believers gathering. Some listened and promised to join, others shunned us immediately. It was starting to feel like a good day until I saw a figure I remember very well waltz inside a shop.

In my bid to affirm my thoughts I forgot about Tina and started heading for the shop. Without thinking twice I entered the shop and I regretted immediately because the first thing I saw was the devilish device called the Television. I had to rush out of the shop.

“Why did you run off like that?” Tina scolded me in her usual quiet tone.

“Let’s go” I told her while I repeatedly asked God and Vicar Paul for forgiveness.

“Hey it’s you again” The familiar voice said from behind me and something told me a smile was attached.

I turned slowly or rather dramatically. Tina moaned softly by my side.

“Hi” I simply said.

“Why did you run out like that” He sat on a bench.

“You had an evil device in there” I explained. He stood and checked his shop with unbiased curiosity.

“What evil device?” He was puzzled.

“The television. It’s an evil device used by the devil to pass misinformation and to control the minds of those who watch it” I explained like I was answering a question in Sunday school. I felt very proud of myself. I’m willing to bet on all the Believer’s Bible in my house that he didn’t know that but he surprised me by bursting into fits of laughter.

“Why are you laughing?” I was as pained as I was confused.

“From what hole did you come from. Who is brainwashing you in this twenty first century?”

“I told you this boy is no good” Tina whispered to me.

“We will take our leave now” I said with the little dignity I had in me.

“Tina and Sarah what are you both still doing there” Steven waved us from a distance. It was time to go back to camp.

The journey back to the camp was tedious. Not because of the bumps and portholes on the road but because I had to deal with another set of self conflicting thoughts.

Last month he asked me if I wasn’t in the wrong place, I went back and did my research and I came back with answers. Now he didn’t even let me deliver the answers I had so diligently prepped for before storming me with another question. Who was brainwashing me? Which was absurd because the Vicar can never brainwash us. He is the Messiah for crying out loud. He knows better.

But if I knew all these why did his questions affect me?

The moment we entered the camp, I knew something was up. The whole place was In chaos. People running to and out of their houses.

Once the car stopped, I joined in the frenzy. My aim was to run home and see if everyone was okay but on my way home I heard two frantic men say to each other.

“Are you sure that is what had happened?” The first man said.

“I’m very sure. If you think I’m joking go to the farm and see”

Before I could process what was going on my legs stirred me to the direction of the farm. I knew for whatever reason I should be going there but curiosity took the best of me as I ran as fast as my skirt could let me throw my legs.

The farm was already crowded with men and women who exclaimed and hissed in high tone.

I fought my way to the spot of the action. My mouth fell open as I saw the cause of all the hullabaloo.

I’m sure it will take a very long time to erase the picture of Elder Williams hanging dead from the tree branch.
