The year was 1996, and I had just been promoted to Senior Secondary 1. A teacher walked into the class and introduced a subject, ‘Economics’.
I smiled within me, wondering why they said we would meet new and strange subjects in that class.
“Economics! isn’t that just Home Economics, that they chose to remove the ‘Home’ from?” I thought ‘brilliantly’.
Then the teacher began, and he said Economics is like an elephant, a really big animàl, standing in front of different men. One was seeing it from the head side, another from the tail side, another from the side where the stomach appeared to have covered everything else within the man’s line of sight.
From what he said that day, that got me blown away, the men all saw the animal from different angles, and made their ‘correct’ observation of what they saw. They all made different observations, but they were all correct!
It is needless to say that the one who saw the tail didn’t have thesame experience and explanation as the one who saw the eyes, the trunk and the ears.
But they were all correct about what they saw, and their explanations will forever make meaning to them!
This teacher told us Alfred Marshal’s (explanation) definition of Economics was most widely accepted, and I was too young to ask him if Alfred had used a drone camera to view the animal to get an all round view that he was famed to have got!
Now, away from that, this picture was used in an episode of Trapped with my sèxytary, and we were meant to state how it relates to the story, and again, people began to see the picture from different angles.
Someone said it means the baby monkey ran to it’s mother in the face of danger, and was hoping to be saved, but had it’s mother captured instead. To him, it means we must not trust anyone, no matter who that one is!
And I’m like, “if the mother being captured was enough to keep the predator occupied, isn’t it worth the trust to give the baby monkey, an escape route?” But then, it’s the angle through which he has seen the elephant!
Then another said it means the mother monkey had to sacrifice her life to save the baby monkey. And as it relates to the story, someone is going to lay down his or her life for the other. And I’m like well, “it’s not like the mother monkey is dead yet, even the pretty of the terrible, can be delivered” But again, it’s how she has seen the elephant!
Yet another said it only smells deãth and dangêr, which when we try to relate to the story, could mean that Sasha and Allen could or would be dyïng. And I’m like, “what if we see it as out of something bitter came something sweet? Honey comes from bees you know!” But as before, it’s how he has seen the elephant!
Then I looked at the picture, and saw a baby monkey that stayed with it’s mother, the unfortunate and unpalatable situation the mother had fallen into, notwithstanding. It stayed back because it knew that even though it didn’t have the immediate solution and ability to save it’s mother, the chances of making a breakthrough could arise somewhere along the line, especially if they stayed together!
The baby monkey chose to stick with the mother, through thick and thin, and that will be called ‘Trust and readiness to work as a team’ something Allen didn’t know he had, until the last minute! But again, this is how I saw the elephant. Yes, it’s the angle through which I saw the elephant.
